Where a recipient was serving, on attachment to another unit at the time of winning the VC, or subsequently transferred to another unit, the award will sometimes be 'claimed' by both the recipient's original unit and also by the one to which he was attached or transferred.
The Victoria Cross for Australia was established on 15 Jan 1991 as the highest Australian operational gallantry award.
It is worth remembering that many servicemen who merited the Victoria Cross never received it because their actions went unnoticed, or the witnesses were killed, or whose self-sacrifice resulted in a lonely death in an unmarked grave.

The defense of Rorke's Drift (January 22 - January 23, 1879) during the Anglo-Zulu War, immediately followed the British Army's humiliating defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana earlier in the day.
In the ensuing action, eleven Victoria Crosses were won, the largest number of VCs awarded during a single action in British military history.

The Victoria Cross was presented to Private Ravenhill by the Duke of York (King George V) at Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on 4th June 1901.
He was presented with the Victoria Cross by General Sir Redvers Buller VC on 4th March 1900 at Ladysmith, South Africa.
It is known that he was alive in January 1887 because he was reported in the quarterly army list of the recipients of the Victoria Cross for January 1887.

Since the Victoria Cross was instigated by Queen Victoria in 1856, only 1355 have been awarded (the double awards for Arthur Martin-Leake, Charles Hazlitt Upham and Noel Godfrey Chavasse are included in the total).
There may possibly have been more VC's awarded but the posthumous VC was only started in 1905, among the first recipients in 1907 were Lts Melvill and Coghill who were killed whilst saving the colours from Isandhlwana on the 22nd.
The action at Rorke's Drift is well covered by the numerous publications and web sites which are devoted to the subject as well as the details of the lives of the VC recipients and their action in the defence.

The actual Warrant instituting the Victoria Cross which was signed on the 29 January, 1856 clearly refers to the VC as a Decoration.
Special Army Order 65 of 1961 - Warrant for Recoding the Conditions of Award of the Victoria Cross, incorporating the Increase of Pension and the Extension of this to Commissioned Officers : is quite clear and specific refering in a number of instances to the VC as a Decoration.

My husbands family has been trying to find out information on his great-great grandfather John Trodick whom we were told recieved the victoria cross for the battle of sepatapol in the crimean war 1856.
John Mulholland and Alan Jordan, together with the memberss of the Victoria Cross Research Group are to be congratulated on producing what has long been missing, an easy cross reference by way of the Victoria Cross Bibliography, to other publications and material on the Victoria Cross.
