Abstract algebra   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Abstract algebra is the field of mathematics concerned with the study of algebraic structures such as groups, rings and fieldss.
The term "abstract algebra" is used to distinguish the field from "elementary algebra" or "high school algebra" which teaches the correct rules for manipulating formulas and algebraic expressions involving real and complex numbers.
Historically, algebraic structures usually arose first in some other field of mathematics, were specified axiomatically, and were then studied in their own right in abstract algebra.

Polynomial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In linear algebra, the characteristic polynomial of a square matrix encodes several important properties of the matrix.
The Abel-Ruffini theorem in algebra states that generally there is no closed formula to calculate the roots of a polynomial of degree 5 or higher.
Other related objects studied in abstract algebra are formal power series, which are like polynomials but may have infinite degree, and the rational functions, which are ratios of polynomials.

Algebra (from the Arabic "al-djebr" meaning "reunion", "connection" or "completion") is a branch of mathematics which may be defined as a generalization and extension of arithmetic.
elementary algebra, where the properties of the real number system are recorded, symbols are used as "place holders" to denote constants and variables, and the rules governing mathematical expressions and equations involving these symbols are studied
abstract algebra, where algebraic structures such as fields, groups, and rings are axiomatically defined and investigated.

What is and is not ''sterile'' amongst abstract developments is one topic where mathematicians often refer to ideas of good taste, as well as applicability and the subject's own tradition.
The rudiments, starting with arithmetic and moving on to basic application of mathematics disciplines including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus, constitute a core curriculumcore school subject in primary educationprimary and secondary education: also referred to as ''mathematics'', even though it is a very restricted view of the subject taken as a whole.
The modern fields of differential geometry and algebraic geometry generalize geometry in different directions: differential geometry emphasizes the concepts of functions, fiber bundles, derivatives, smooth functionsmoothness, and direction, while in algebraic geometry geometrical objects are described as solution sets of polynomial equations.

In 1965, when Professor Frank Ayres' Schaum's Outline of Modern Abstract Algebra was published, advanced algebra had undergone a number of significant developments on the abstract or theoretical plane, and the Schaum's Outline incorporated all the new elements, integrating them with the traditional material in the discipline.
Abstract algebra is an essential course in any undergraduate mathematics program, as well as necessary to many graduate students in mathematics.
Abstract algebra treats the theoretical and conceptual topics in algebra, as distinct from the numerical questions that occupy students in lower level courses.

Rooted in the successful tradition of earlier editions, this revision of a popular classic for a first course in abstract algebra presents rings before groups.
This organization helps make abstract concepts more concrete and allows the course to begin with material (the ongoing example of the ring of integers) that is already familiar to the student. This Sixth Edition contains many new exercises as well as a new section on RSA cryptology (as an application of properties of the Euler function).
Two topics, order properties of integers and mathematical induction, have been moved forward in the book so that induction can be used more systematically in the proofs.

This volume offers a gentle introduction to proof in a concrete setting, the introduction of abstract concepts only after a careful study of important examples, and the gradual increase of the level of sophistication as one progresses through the book.
Answers to selected problems are included, so I recommend this book for self study as well as a textbook for any undergraduate abstract algebra course.
In trying to teach students algebra, I tried to use this book to teach them from, but I found that all the concepts were introduced at what is seemingly high school level.
