List of academic disciplines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An academic discipline, or field of study, is a branch of knowledge which is taught or researched at the college or university level.
Disciplines are defined and recognised by the academic journals in which research is published, and the learned societies and academic departments or faculties to which their practitioners belong.
Today's disciplines have their roots in the mid- to late-19th century secularization of universities, when the traditional curriculum was supplemented by non-classical languages and literatures, physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering.

Texas act treads on environmental scientists
It would be impossible to regulate which academic backgrounds are qualified to engage in, for example, estimation of the potential for chemicals in soil to leach to groundwater.
Since passage of the act, I have seen numerous instances of professional geoscientists engaged in the evaluation of chemical data while professionals from other academic disciplines are restricted by law from even the simple interpretation of groundwater concentration data.
The multidimensional nature of the environmental field makes it impractical to list specific academic disciplines entitled to engage in “investigation of the earth’s environment”, but environmental scientists and chemists are certainly among them.

Talk:List of academic disciplines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This list, it seems to me, should conform as far as possible to the common structure of universities in administering the disciplines; that's implicit in its hierarchy, where the first level corresponds to broad administrative units, the second to departments, and the third to subfields within departments.
Instead, according to these scientific organizations new academic disciplines are first brought to the fore by newer classification or introduction of newer category or terminology in recent research papers, and the introduction of new journals in order to foster research in new dimensions.
When one is listing academic disciplines it should therefore be based on academic classifications as constantly revised by recent or latest categories as published by leading scientific journals.
