Family romance is at core of Franco Zeffirelli's film adaptation of 'Hamlet.' This is evident in his casting of actors Mel Gibson and Glenn Close in the principal roles, his manipulation of space and landscape, his alteration of the text and his approach to editing.
Franco Zeffirelli's 1990 film adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' is ultimately disappointing because it excises most of the elements in the play that contribute to the character Hamlet's ambiguities, especially the political dimension that helps to explain his hesitation.
As a contemporary adaptation of a Shakespearean comedy, the movie occupies an uneasy position in historical terms as it both bears witness to the birth of modern romantic comedy and stands side by side with the genre's latest representations.

We will pay particular attention, though, to political aspects of these plays, in other words, the ways that these texts offer valuable critiques of dominant ideas of gender roles, the family, class relations, cultural identity, race, nationalism, and colonization.
Rather than valuing these plays as objects which seem to transcend conflict and history, we will examine how these texts remain deeply immersed in the political life of their time.

When that conversation took place, Durrell says, the usual route to a PhD in musicology was "picking an obscure Renaissance composer and doing a life and works." Durrell, on the other hand, was proposing a dissertation at the University of Toronto about the music in film adaptations of Shakespearean plays.
Durrell "invented a notation system for the music so the melodic contours could be analyzed and compared." Although the project gave him useful computer skills, it was some distance from current music in film adaptations of Shakespearean plays.
For example, he provided a descriptive list of themes and asked his students to identify them in a series of video clips.
