The RNZAF was formed from New Zealand components of the British Royal Air Force, becoming an independent force in 1923.
The primary role of the RNZAF was to take advantage of New Zealand's distance from the conflict by training aircrew, as part of the Empire Air Training Scheme, alongside the other major former British colonies, Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
The RNZAF ensign was approved in 1939, based on the ensign of the Royal Air Force, with the letters "NZ" inserted within the roundel.

Royal New Zealand Air Force - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The early lend-lease aircraft were obsolete and incapable of holding their own against the highly skilled and well-equipped Japanese air forces, but nothing else was available and the RNZAF flew with the tools they had to hand, notably at Guadalcanal where No 15 and No 14 squadrons equipped with Kittyhawks, fought with distinction in mid-1943.
At its peak in the Pacific, the RNZAF had 13 squadrons of Corsair fighters, six of Venturas, two each of Catalinas and Avengers, No 25 Dauntless dive bombers, two of C-47 Dakotas, as well as mixed transport and communications squadrons, a flight of Short Sunderlands and nearly 1000 training machines.
The rest of the air force rapidly divested itself of aircraft and manpower and settled mainly into training and transport mode before the advent of rejuvenated 14 and 75 squadrons.

Hawker Tempest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hawker Tempest was an RAF fighter aircraft of World War II, an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon, and one of the most powerful fighters used in the war.
The Typhoon's thick, rugged wing was partly to blame for some of the aircraft's performance problems, and as far back as March 1940 a few engineers had been set aside to investigate the new "laminar flow" wing, which the Americans had implemented in the P-51 Mustang.
The aircraft was originally named the "Typhoon Mark II", but was renamed "Tempest" in January 1942, when more prototypes with various experimental configurations were ordered.

If the enemy has no carriers and no way to make an amphib assault they will need to capture a port using commercial shipping and ship in weapons and aircraft.
NZ is to far from any possible enemy to fly there with tactical aircraft.
Against this type of threat and given their peace keeping duties spending money on ground forces makes a lot of sense for them.

The decals give you markings for three different low-visibility aircraft, all medium grey, and you also get a pair of high-quality fuel tanks, each moulded in two parts in a fine and glossy white resin.
Markings for two paint schemes are provided, the 'lizard' scheme of forest green and olive drab with normal insignia and markings, and the modern low-visibility scheme of all-over forest green.
The markings given for the 'lizard' scheme would also be correct for the RNZAF all-over orange Antarctic scheme.

During the year the RNZN Hospital extended its surgical facilities to the RNZAF and Army to assist with the delays occasioned by the inability of civilian hospitals to admit non-urgent Service personnel.
These facilities, which are used in conjunction with RNZAF aircraft between New Zealand and Singapore, have led to a considerable saving in time and expenditure on overseas training.
