The Japanese Navy was in general terms more traditionalist, in defending ancient values and the sacrality of the Emperor; the Japanese Army was more forward-looking, in the sense of valuing primarily strong leadership, as is evidenced by the use of the coup and direct action.
After the Japanese surrender in August 1945, the whole structure was dismantled by the Allied occupation authorities in the whole Japanese Empire and Japanese-held territories.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commander of the Japanese fleet, devised a plan to immobilize the U.S. fleet at the outset of the war with a surprise attack.
The Navy air bases at Ford Island and Kaneohe Bay, the Marine airfield at Ewa and the Army Air Corps fields at Bellows, Wheeler and Hickam were all bombed and strafed as other elements of the attacking force began their assaults on the ships moored in Pearl Harbor.
Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged, the majority hit before the had a chance to take off.

The families of the Japanese holdouts on the island of Anatahan, were contacted in Japan and requested by the U. Navy to write letters advising them that the war was over and that they should surrender.

In a few cases, when the designed role of an aircraft changed, the new use was indicated by adding a dash and a second type letter to the end of the existing short designation.
From 1927, new Army aircraft were given a type number based on the last digits of the Japanese year that the type was accepted into service.
And a few foreign designed or built aircraft entered Japanese service, and these were given an alphabetical type rather than a numeric one, based on either the country of origin (Type I Heavy Bomber, for the Italian Fiat B.R. 20) or the manufacturer's name (Type LO Transport for the U.S. Lockheed Model 14).

A strong Japanese thrust in the central Pacific to occupy Midway Island was led by a four-carrier Mobile Force, supported by heavy units of the Japanese First Fleet, and covered by a diversionary carrier raid on Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.

Through profiles of the aces, scale drawings of all the major navy types, text explaining tactics, and other painstakingly researched details, this book offers insight on a subject for which there is little information available in English.
Anyway, it is the best I've ever read about Japanese fighter pilots, and the final appendixes are very instrutive.
Additionally, Sakaida does a beautiful job of debunking the myth that the Zero was the only aircraft that the Japanese pilots had available.
