Airbus A380 - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Having seen first Lockheed and then Douglas run into financial difficulties and be forced out of the air transport industry, Airbus and Boeing were very conscious that the decision to build a 600 seat airliner could not be taken lightly.
It should however be noted that, at 555 passengers, the A380 represents a 35% capacity increase over the 747-400 in standard 3 class configuration, while the aircraft has almost 50% more actual space in the cabin.

The Rise & Fall Of The SST
Lockheed proposed the "L-2000", which was a double-delta machine with a capacity of 220 passengers, but the winner was Boeing's "Model 2707", the name obviously implying a Mach 2 aircraft that would be as significant as the Boeing 707.
Maximum capacity was in principle 144 passengers with a high-density seating layout, but in practice seating was not more than 128, and usually more like 100.
The airliner went down in flames and crashed near the town of Gonesse, killing all 109 people aboard and four people who had the bad luck to be in the impact area.

Douglas DC-8 - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Douglas were luke-warm about the jet airliner project, but believed that the USAF tanker contract would go to two companies for two different aircraft (as several USAF transport contracts in the past had done).
The pioneering 40–60 seat Vickers Viscount was already in service and proving enormously popular with both passengers and airlines — it was much faster, quieter, and more comfortable than piston engined types.
One historical oddity associated with the early DC-8s is that the first airliner to exceed the speed of sound (albeit in a shallow dive) was actually a DC-8, on August 21, 1961 at Edwards Air Force Base.

The 757 is the first Boeing airliner launched with non-US engines, Rolls-Royce RB211-535, later, however, the Pratt and Whitney PW2000 was also offered as an option.
This is the initial design with 150 seat capacity which is the direct replacement of the 727.
The 757-300 is a stretched version, trading range for passenger capacity and the plane first flew in August 1996.

First class will still have 12 seats in a 2-2-2 configuration but the current sleeperettes will be replaced by flat beds, and the seat pitch will rise from 60in to 80in.
Executive class will have 14 seats (only half the current 28) in a 2-3-2 configuration but the seats will be sleeperettes and seat pitch will rise from 48in to 63in.
This new seat pitch is more in line with what the airline had in the two Airbus A310-300s which were used on the LHR route until replaced by the A340.

German airliners built by Junkers, Dornier, and Fokker were the most advanced in the world at the time.
The peak of German air travel came in the mid-1930s, when Nazi propaganda ministers approved the start of commercial zeppelin service: the big airships were a symbol of industrial might, but the fact that they used flammable hydrogen gas raised safety concerns that culminated with the Hindenburg disaster of 1937.

Air Traffic Control (ATC) Technology - In the early 1920s, the first airmail flights were guided to their destinations by bonfires, railroad flares, automobile road maps and “legendary luck.” In the 1930s, as civil and military air traffic increased, NACA and Congress began serious study and progress toward a unified system of air traffic control.

The terrorist was an actor; the ammunition was paint balls; dummies occupied most of the seats, and the only passengers were a handful of reporters, invited by the Transportation Department to observe air marshal training exercises.
The message from the Transportation Department was obvious: Skilled air marshals—not pilots armed with guns—should be the last line of defense aboard commercial airliners.
But air marshal officials contend that their numbers are much higher than most people think, and while they aren't on board every flight, the threat of their presence is a deterrent.
