This debut album is an incredible work of rock and roll: high energy, with great performances all around, and with songs that are musically extraordinary (this album often uses weird time signatures, like "Tatooed Love Boys" with its alternating 7 and 8 beat measures.) Forget about "Brass in Pocket," the single from this album.
The album "Stunt" was their breakthrough album, the one that put them on the map with "One Week"--but don't miss this one.
Of all their albums, I think this one is the best, with its unique and daring version of the Hallelujah chorus from Handel, its tragic love story ("On the road to Fairfax County") and its funny yet poignant tale of falling in love with a biker ("I Fell in Love").

For any publication with a sufficiently large staff, that final list is almost as much a testament to the diversity and interests of its staff than the albums themselves.
Sure, the cream of the crop rises to the top, but when Top 10s are compiled into a big list like this one, it reflects on the diversity of tastes that a group of writers brings to the table.
Many of the names are familiar, whether they're the hot new artist of the moment or musical legends with storied careers, and all in their way contributed to a year in music that seemed to have a little something for everyone.

It is to the vision and perseverance of many of these artists that we owe the roots of hip-hop, synth-pop, and most notably for this publication, alternative and indie rock.
The main thrust of the album was more psychedelic, using the claustrophobic tightness of punk and the vastness of Americana as head-metaphors, analogies for two distinct states of being really goddamn freaked out.
At the time of this album's release, Richard Meltzer called X, "the only punk band with half a chance at commercial success in America today." Truth is, they never had a prayer; they were better than that.

It's an interesting fluke that, statistically, Björk's two greatest albums just happened to wind up right next to each other on this list: after all, few artists on this list could rival her in terms of innovation, vision, talent, and high-yield experimentation, and Post was the record to establish this.
And despite all the jagged ends and dissociated means, the end result was as cohesive as an album this multi-faceted could dare to be.
It clicked with many-- and when thousands of people took pictures of their obsessions, what developed was the sublime poetry of a reclusive Scottish lad, a band whose rich details were worth devouring, and a Kafka reader lounging in front of a morning window, bathed in red.

PopMatters Music Feature | The Fate of the Album
Music critics have been bemoaning the death of the album format ever since the heyday of Napster, and the subsequent dawn of music related digital technology in the late 1990s.
To put the issue into literary terms, the single is the equivalent of the short story, capturing the essence of a tale in a short window, while an album extends the process through a series of vignettes, or songs, conveying a deeper richness and complexity.
With this framework in mind, the music staff at PopMatters have put their collective heads together and compiled a list of albums released since January 1, 2000, ordered by release date, to illustrate the continued musical significance of the long-play format.
