Article: Naming the Stars: The Awards of Science Fiction (part 1 of 2), by Greg Beatty
Each award is given to recognize a specific type of achievement in the field; each is also given in memory of a giant in science fiction.
I saw this at James Gunn's summer intensive course on teaching science fiction; students in the course who were genre readers had a completely different response to the stories they read from those who were prospective teachers experiencing the field for the first time.
As the list of awards and deaths indicates, these awards also recognize a sort of passing of the guard, a sense that the early founders are passing on and that their memories should be kept alive.

Age of Wonders, by David G. Hartwell
The science fiction reader may be your attorney, your dentist, your children's schoolteacher, the film projectionist at your local theater, your wife or husband or child, happily living in two worlds at once, the real world of science fiction and the only apparent reality of everyday life.
Science fiction as written and published during the last twenty years is so diverse in every aspect that no reader except at the height of the omnivorous stage can expect to be attracted to all of it.
Science fiction people, among their own kind, are almost always contentious-after all, a favorite activity is to point to an unlabeled work that may be considered SF and argue about whether or not it is, really, SF.

79.01.05: Search for Tomorrow: Science Fiction Literature and Today’s Student
Science fiction, although readily holding the interest of the reader and viewer throughout the ages, has frequently come under attack as an escapist form of literature which is steeped in myth, fantasy, and imaginary utopias.
Science fiction is generally fantastic, as it usually presents at least one postulate which does not conform to the laws of reality at the time in which it is written.
Science fiction and fantasy are different categories of literature, but in order not to blur their differences it is necessary to define science fiction by what is contained in it—its elements; fantasy is generally explained by how it presents what it has in it—its structure.

Now that many fan fiction authors publish on the Internet, copyright holders (regardless of whether they are individual authors or corporations) can easily use search engines to discover their characters being used in unauthorized or unapproved ways.
The most important defense for fan fiction authors, however, is "fair use." Under this doctrine, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports.
Fan fiction authors who distribute their work commercially may be accused of trademark dilution in addition to other intellectual property violations.

 Exploring Alternatives by Wendy Darling
One of the best examples of alternative sexuality in science fiction is Bending the Landscape: Science Fiction (the first in a trilogy that would eventually include Fantasy and Horror).
In the book’s introduction, the editors say their aim was to explore one of science fiction's enduring themes, “the Alien, the Not-Self, the Other,” with the “other” a lesbian or gay man (or something reasonably close, in science fiction terms).
Storm Constantine, whom I cited under science fiction, is certainly an author who scores very high in delivering fantasy novels that include “alternative” themes – not just in terms of sexuality, but gender as well.

For instance, if you believe human beings are fundamentally understandable, predictable, and subject to whatever you define as "the laws of nature" (apparently all figured out and bereft of mystery), you might agree with Trent Walters that characters in fiction must be "consistent".
Or it may be that Trent simply forgot to say that he was not talking about all fiction, but only fiction that aspires to be "psychological realism", a popular mode of fantasy in 20th century literature.
A noble man, and certainly somebody I respect, but there are literally dozens of writers of that type whom intelligent people seem to find very moving.

Though there are a couple of standouts, it's a pretty bad television season for science fiction when I find some of the most engrossing shows to be eight-year-old episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
As we learned in the DVD extras, if not before, the hatch actually seems to be central to creator J.J. Abrams' vision of the series' setting and plotline as being out of the ordinary, though not so extraordinary as to include obvious sci-fi elements such as time travel or aliens.
Since the essence of science fiction is to imagine the "unimaginable" -- holocausts, alien invasions, technology or social engineering gone awry, even alternate histories -- I think a healthy dose of sci-fi thinking can help in preparing (or at least coping) with calamities, on both a personal and societal level.
