Royal Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first reformation and major expansion of the Navy Royal, as it was then known, occurred in the 16th century during the reign of Henry VIII whose ships, Henri Grâce a Dieu ("Great Harry") and Mary Rose, engaged the French navy in the battle of the Solent in 1545.
Royal Navy was a force designed for the Cold War — with its three ASW aircraft carriers and a force of small frigates and destroyers, its purpose was to search for and destroy Soviet submarines in the North Atlantic.
The Royal Navy is established under the royal prerogative and the head of the Royal Navy, known as the Lord High Admiral, and overall head of the Armed Forces, is the British Sovereign.

Since the Royal Navy of that era possessed the largest network of bases around the world of any fleet, the RFA at first took a relatively minor role.
After 1945, the RFA assumed centre stage in supporting the operations of the Royal Navy in the many conflicts that the Navy was involved in.
With the end of the Cold War, and the resumption of the worldwide role for the Royal Navy, the RFA will be called on a great deal in the next few decades.

Similarly, their comments on the vessels on which they sailed tended to be brief, limited to listing the comfort (or discomfort) that they experienced, and only indirectly describing the workings of the ship and its crew.
