 MARC Code List for Countries
The list was originally compiled in 1967/68 in collaboration with a number of agencies and the Library of Congress MARC Pilot Project participants.
Any variant names of the place or names of places assigned to use that code are listed on successive lines, with the first such name preceded by the symbol UF (used for).
Thus when using country codes to retrieve records, if the code for the entity has changed since the implementation of an earlier code list, it is advisable to specify both the new and previously assigned (historical) codes in the retrieval request if records coded prior to the changes are desired.

The appropriate use of such names is of concern to governments and other public authorities in the light of the risk of their speculative and abusive registration and use, particularly by registrants and resellers without any relationship with the country or place concerned.
Attached to the communication was a list of 327 names to be put on reserve until discussions could be concluded regarding whether ICANN should allow the arrangements agreed between the GAC and Afilias to proceed, or whether they should be precluded and the names released for general registration.
The list provided to Afilias, consistent with the GAC recommendation and subsequent to the ICANN Board resolution, contained both English-language country and distinct economy names, as listed on the ISO 3166-1 standard, and their equivalents in the official languages of the countries concerned.

Jack Sparks - The Other Side of Country - May 09, 2005 Archives   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Country Music used to be an American art form, forged in the fires of a rapidly growing nation, where urban problems met rural realities, and vice versa.
Country is probably a more onerous example though, because in moving toward this demographic, it has not only choked the meaning and the art out of the music, it has also ditched people who are regularly referred to as cultural icons from its playlists.
Our aim is solely to have the flagship stations of the many diverse regions of this country represent the styles and flavors of the people around it, who display the deep emotions and tales of what it means to be Country in that part of the nation.

Flag as a symbol of language - stupidity or insult?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Typically people know names of countries better than their flags, so usually a flag isn't such a great symbol communicatively.
Even in the rare cases where the native speakers of a language and the citizens of a country are almost identical groups, there is no reason to bind the country and the language strictly together.
Such use of flags could be taken as an insult, since loyalty to a flag is loyalty to the country that it symbolizes.
