Amphibious transport dock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An amphibious transport dock (also called a landing platform dock or LPD) is a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions.
The United States Navy operates several of this type of ship; their helicopters, vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and air-cushion or conventional landing craft support of the United States Marine Corps's "vertical envelopment" assault doctrine.
Amphibious transport docks perform the mission of amphibious transports, amphibious cargo ships, and the older LPDs by incorporating both a flight deck and a well deck that can be ballasted and deballasted to support landing craft or amphibious vehicles.

 Amphibious Forces - Navy Ships
An amphibious operation is a military operation launched from the sea by naval and landing forces embarked in ships or craft involving a landing on a hostile or potentially hostile shore.
The principal type of amphibious operation is the amphibious assault, which is distinguished from other types of amphibious operations in that it involves establishing a force on a hostile or potentially hostile shore.
Throughout the amphibious operation, but most particularly during the highly vulnerable ship-to-shore movement phase, success may hinge on the ability to integrate both land-based and maritime air defense resources to isolate the area of operations from hostile air platforms and airborne weapons attack to the maximum extent possible.

 ARSENAL SHIP
The arsenal ship is also severely limited in its ability to force entry into a combat zone because of its vulnerabilities, lack of defenses, and limited speed.
The arsenal ship will not be a very usable weapons platform for combat in those areas where it is not pre-positioned and it will be highly exposed to defensive measures at the start of hostilities if it is pre-positioned.
The amphibious landings of past wars cannot be contemplated seriously given the broad range of threats an amphibious landing force would face: for example, both cruise and ballistic missiles, potentially armed with chemical or biological warheads, and advanced anti-personnel and anti-ship mines.

The five ships of the Tarawa class general-purpose amphibious assault ships (LHA) reach the end of their expected service lives at the rate of one per year from 2011 to 2015.
Since these ships would be the first built to the new design, they would have learning curve risks that could elevate their price further relative to the LHD-8, which is further along the learning curve.
By December 2002 a slightly longer and wider version of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship was one of three designs under consideration as a "sea base" to replace four aging LHA-class "big deck" amphibious ships by 2015.

The basic question raised by Qiao and Wang is this: "Faced with high-tech warfare, how can a weak and developing country survive?" To answer it, they decided to study the USA, the sole superpower of the post-Cold War era whose economic power and dominance in contemporary warfare is unquestioned.
For example, in dealing with Osama bin Laden, they write: "[The] Americans have used state terrorist warfare, intelligence warfare, financial warfare, network warfare and legal warfare." Their use of the phrase "state terrorist warfare" apparently refers to the August 1998 decision by the Clinton administration to launch cruise missiles into Sudan and Afghanistan.

The committee concluded, based on examination of all these needs, that the mine warfare portions of fleet and subunit exercises and readiness reporting are not given the status of other warfare areas.
Their relegation instead to secondary and unrealistic auxiliary positions fosters an inappropriate and inaccurate concept of the roles and importance of mine warfare in maritime operations among the officer corps from their most junior years.
Recommendation: Naval component and other operational commanders should enhance realism in predeployment training, fleet maneuvers, and amphibious warfare exercises by routinely including mine threats, in addition to air and submarine threats, in such exercises and by assigning realistic consequences to poorly planned and executed countermine warfare operations.
