		These are concepts which, although not exclusive to anarchism, are significant in historical and/or modern anarchist circles.
		(It should be noted that the anarchist mileu is philosophically heterogeneous and there is disagreement over which of these concepts should play a role in anarchism.)

		The anarchist movement was based upon applying the core ideas of Proudhon (his anti-statism and socialism) and developing them in the same spirit, and these ideas find their roots in socialist history and theory.
		Anarchists oppose the principle of hierarchical authority because it is the basis of domination, which is not only degrading in itself but generally leads to exploitation and all the social evils which follow from exploitation, from poverty, hunger and homelessness to class struggle and armed conflict.
		Because anarchists oppose hierarchical authority, domination, and exploitation, they naturally seek to eliminate all hierarchies, as the very purpose of hierarchy is to facilitate the domination and (usually) exploitation of subordinates.

	Paradigm : from magic words to meaningful concepts
		Unfortunately, the consistent lifelong anarchist is a rebel bound to fail, at least in politics, because politics has to do with gaining and maintaining power and the true anarchist is not interested in any game in which the reward is power (dominion over individuals and communities).
		To compile the list of individuals (kings and heads of state) killed by anarchists, a small piece of paper would suffice; for the homicidal and genocidal crimes perpetrated by the states, many volumes would not be enough.
		Anarchists were, in many cases, isolated individuals, on the run from place to place, unable to contrast the lies and fabrication of the state, whose control of the means of communication grew parallel to the weakening in the diffusion of anarchist ideas.

		Anarchists, (although generally against violence against people except in self-defense), have also been at the forefront of militant resistance against capital and the state, engaging in property destruction against various corporations, militant street battles with police, confronting neo-Nazi and far-right groups, and also having a strong militant presence at anti-globalization protests.
		Anarchists believe that if they were to support a war they would be strengthening the state — indeed, Peter Kropotkin was alienated from other anarchists when he expressed support for the British in World War I.

		As might be expected, different groups of anarchists are constantly trying to define anarchists with different views out of existence, just as many Christians say that their sect is the only "true" Christianity and many socialists say that their socialism is the only "true" socialism.
		Anarchists of all varieties would reject this argument; sometimes claiming that the critic misunderstands their position, other times that the critic's assumptions are too pessimistic.
		The interpretation of "rulership," however, varies: left anarchists tend to see the employer-employee relationship as one of rulership, and anarcho-capitalists are often dubious of the claim that envisaged anarchists communes would be democratic and hence voluntary.

	The Postmodern Anarchist
		In The Politics of Postanarchism he hones in on the fact that much of the classical anarchist critique of Marxist and related socialist politics from back in the day predate many more recent critiques by poststructuralists and postfeminists.
		I think his rejection of violence and the life choices he's made, choices he discusses in Conversations on Science, Culture and Time (Amazon link), make him an extremely important figure for those concerned with the tendency for left academics to waste their time on turf battles and internal ideological struggles.

	Choose Your Own Adventure
		The other story is more game-oriented, and it does a respectable job of allowing the reader to puzzle out a riddle, being designed in such a way that making a wrong choice initially still won't make the ultimate solution too obvious.
		Of course, the problem with most of the historical adventures in this series is that one can't help comparing them to the books in the better-written and more heavily researched Time Machine series, a comparison which makes them seem rather trivial and shallow.
		The book suffers from the fact that it has no particular objective or plot, and not all of its branches and endings are entirely satisfying, but it is still a respectable adventure full of the implausible but fun science-fantasy concepts that readers have come to expect of the series.
