Topic: List of antiviral drugs

Antiviral drug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antiviral drugs are a class of medication used specifically for treating viral infections.
Most of the antivirals now available are designed to help deal with HIV; herpesvirus, which are best known for causing cold sores but actually cover a wide range of diseases; and the hepatitis B and C viruses, which can cause liver cancer.
Two drugs named zanamivir and oseltamivir that have been recently introduced to treat influenza prevent the release of viral particles by blocking a molecule named neuraminidase that is found on the surface of flu viruses, and also seems to be constant across a wide range of flu strains.

Antiviral Drugs for Flu - Antiviral Herbs
All of the antiviral drugs are different in terms of who can take them, how they are given, any dosing changes based on age or medical conditions, and side effects.
Antiviral drugs are most often used to control flu outbreaks in institutions, for example in nursing homes, or in hospital wards, where people at high risk (see below) for complications from flu are in close contact with each other.
The anti-influenza antiviral drugs are not a substitute for vaccine and are used only as an adjunct to vaccine in the control of influenza.

After the vaccine and antiviral drug links, there is a list of web sites that provide additional influenza information from United States government agencies and the World Health Organization, and a list of contacts for further inquiries.
Antiviral drugs can also help to reduce the time it takes for symptoms to improve in uncomplicated illness caused by influenza virus.
Use of antiviral drugs does not eliminate the risk of complications, and some complications (as well as other medical conditions that could be confused with influenza) can be life-threatening.

Antivirals are fast becoming the drugs of the 21st century.
Another 60 antivirals have begun clinical trials, aimed primarily at HIV, the virus that can lead to AIDS, and hepatitis B and C. Also in the works: an oral pill to prevent smallpox (thereby disabling a terror weapon) and a drug to treat SARS.
(Drugs for the flu already are available.) Sales of antivirals will total $10.6 billion this year, less than half the size of the market for antibiotics ($24 billion), but antivirals could approach $14 billion in three years, says market research firm Business Communications.

Another reason antivirals were late in development is that the technology to dissect and understand the molecular biology of viruses had to be developed.
The main reason we cannot develop antiviral drugs or mass produce the vaccine is that we cannot grow the virus in vitro, meaning to grow the virus in the test tube.
Antiviral drugs will continue to become more important and vital agents in medicine, and I am excited about the prospects for development of antivirals in avian medicine.

WINNIPEG — Federal officials drawing up Canada's pandemic influenza response plan estimate the country would need about 222 million doses of a critical antiviral drug to treat and protect key groups of people in the first wave of a mild to moderate flu pandemic.
One of the drafters of the plan said Tuesday the starting assumption is that there will not be enough of the drug, sold under the brand name Tamiflu, to go around.

Specific liver function is affected by drugs, hormonal manipulation, inadequate diet and even basic food components including protein, carbohydrates and fats have been shown to have a definite effect on liver detoxification.
High protein diets have demonstrated increased rates of metabolism of drugs and conversely low protein diets are also associated with increased susceptibility to pesticides, low drug metabolism.
The utilization of amino acids is central to the process of liver detoxification and commonly long term exposure to drugs, xenobiotics and other forms of endotoxin can easily result in a deficiency of these essential amino acids and their specific functions.
