The table listing areas with recent local transmission is updated daily to assist in the identification and reporting of SARS cases.
On 14 May, Toronto was removed from the list of areas with recent local transmission and from the list of areas for which WHO has issued recommendations pertaining to international travel.
The list of areas with recent local transmission is issued by WHO to facilitate use of the SARS case definitions to detect and report suspect and probable cases.

“Hong Kong, with its dense population and fluid border with China, had one of the hardest outbreaks to control.
In late March, Hong Kong suffered a major setback when a large cluster, eventually numbering more than 300, of almost simultaneous new cases was traced to a single building in the Amoy Gardens housing state.
Hong Kong also benefited from the contribution of its outstanding scientists, epidemiologists, and clinicians, who were at the forefront of efforts to track down source cases in the various clusters, identify the causative agent, develop diagnostic tests, and work out treatment protocols.

In Hong Kong, initially one of the hardest hit areas, ESRI China (Hong Kong) Limited rapidly appreciated the value of GIS as a means of assembling and analyzing information on the spread and distribution of the disease.
Residents and visitors to Hong Kong could, therefore, easily check on the Web site which buildings in their neighborhoods had, or were suspected as having, infected cases and which had been cleared.
On June 23, 2003, WHO removed Hong Kong from its list of areas affected by local transmission of the disease, and by the end of July 2003 all countries that had experienced the disease had been taken from this list.
