Military and Civilian Tanks, Jeeps and Armored Vehicles of the World Listing
Tanks (among other many armored vehicles available to military planners today) have long been the kings of the modern battlefield.
More importantly, battlefield engineer vehicles can compliment any fast-moving army, readied to remove road obstacle, destroyed friendly or enemy armor, clear the road of anti-armor land mines or even lay down a temporary multi-purpose bridge system.
These vehicles often serve in the more supplementary roles such as command and control, anti-tank or biological, nuclear and chemical environmental testing platforms.

Armoured warfare - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Armoured warfare in modern warfare is understood to be the use of armoured fighting vehicles as a central component of the methods of war.
During the Cold War, NATO and the Warsaw Pact assumed armoured warfare to be a dominant aspect of conventional ground warfare in Europe.
The other major reason is that most armoured vehicles have thinner armour on the roof of the turret and on the engine deck, so an anti-tank guided missile from an attack helicopter or ground-attack jet) hitting them from the top can be deadly even if it has a small warhead.

Krauss-Maffei claim that typical roles for it are as an armoured personnel carrier, a light reconn-aissance vehicle, a command and control vehicle, a materials transport vehicle, a weapons carrier for a turret-mounted gun, a mortar vehicle, a light air defence system, a missile launching vehi-cle and forward observer vehicle.
Moreover the need to equip tactical reconnaissance units with vehicles with high strategic and operational mobility which are also able to carry out peacekeeping tasks has led to the setting-up of an R and D programme to develop two separate families of wheeled armoured vehicles.
In fact, as far as vehicle design is concerned the Germans and British alike want a battlefield command vehicle and troop carrier while the French need is for an infantry combat tank mounted with a turret bearing a 25 mm gun to complement their Leclerc battlefield tank.

An Anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) or weapon (ATGW) is a guided missile primarily designed to hit and destroy tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles.
ATGMs range in size from small shoulder-launched portable weapons, to very large vehicle- or aircraft-mounted missiles capable of defeating the heaviest tank armour.
More advanced guidance systems rely on laser marking or a TV camera view from the nose of the missile, and some of the latest models are "fire-and-forget" and even "".

[No title]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
I don't think it's very likely you'd find any abandoned vehicles lying around the battlefield, since crewmen are likely to be a lot safer inside an armoured hull than running around in the skin outside their tracks.
And I don't think a vehicle could reasonably give up any of its crewmen and still operate at full effectiveness; if it could, then they'd never have that guy in there, and use the space and weight for more ECM, thus raising the defence by one.
Mind you, it coud be that the bigger vehicles can afford the space for extra crew without sacrificing other things (like silhouette or armor), and that could explain he one-man LGEV (whose reduced efficiency would already be reflected in its attack rating), but the relationship between size and crew probably isn't a straight-line one.

As a result of changing operational requirements, an increasing number of countries are now considering acquiring, or have already acquired, fleets of light armoured vehicles (LAVs).
The US Army was originally expected to decide whether to choose an all-wheeled solution or a mix of tracked and wheeled vehicles early this month, but the announcement has been delayed.
Outside the former Warsaw Pact countries, most wheeled armoured fighting vehicles were, for a long time, of the 4 x 4 type, but over the last few years there has been a clear trend towards acquiring 6 x 6 and 8 x 8 types with their increased payloads and greater cross-country mobility.

Logistics  Armoured logistical vehicles/soft skin trucks StrategyPage.com
The fundamental question that Army vehicle developers are trying to answer is whether the next generation of battlefield trucks will be “just trucks” hauling supplies in the rear, or whether they should be enhanced with protective armor, weapons, advanced electronics and communications systems, so they can serve in combat roles on the front lines.
Further, any vehicles coming out of the FTTS project would have to be compatible with new vehicles developed under the Future Combat Systems program.
In future brigades, called “units of action,” equipped with FCS technology, the Army wants the combat vehicles to be able to directly request supplies from the trucks, which would require that the trucks be part of the command-and-control network.
