Hearst had been seeking a buyer for the Examiner since on Aug. 6, when it abruptly announced its purchase of the Chronicle for $660 million, pre-empting any potential bidders for its morning rival as well as the production equipment the papers shared.
Hearst, responding to antitrust concerns from local, state and federal officials, in January sweetened the deal for potential buyers, by adding trucks, printing presses and other assets, along with the newspaper's name and subscriber list.
Hearst said the new owner will assume certain liabilities and Hearst was making a significant financial commitment to the continued publication of the Examiner.

After the Commission staff advised Hearst that its original December 1997 notification was deficient, Hearst amended its notification in August 2001 and included documents that were not submitted in its original notification.
