  Astronomer Summary
Astronomers did not emerge as true scientists until the Renaissance, when new observations and theories by astronomers such as Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) of Poland and Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) of Italy challenged the beliefs of the church.
In many respects observational astronomers are closer to the classical image of an astronomer, whereas theoretical astronomers are more strongly rooted in the worlds of physics and mathematics.
Astrology is opposed by nearly all astronomers, who not only reject the notion that the positions of celestial objects govern the future but also note that many of the data and definitions used by astrologers are inaccurate.

Yet another type of Astronomer can be identified; the website builder and promoter, sharing science and sky images as part of the growth in networking astronomy, in-turn, encouraging the growth by disseminating both result and technique.
Astronomers are often mathematicians, but more than likely looking through a telescope or camera and recording the image.

Pluto Stricken From List of Planets: Astronomers Reverse Course on Sphere's Status - Space - RedOrbit
PRAGUE, Czech Republic - Pluto, beloved by some as a cosmic underdog but scorned by astronomers who considered it too dinky and distant, was unceremoniously stripped of its status as a planet Thursday.
The International Astronomical Union, dramatically reversing course just a week after floating the idea of reaffirming Pluto's planethood and adding three new planets to Earth's neighborhood, downgraded the ninth rock from the sun in historic new galactic guidelines.
Astronomers have labored without a universal definition of a planet since well before the time of Copernicus, who proved that the Earth revolves around the sun, and the experts gathered in Prague burst into applause when the guidelines were passed.

Eastern time, the object will hurtle harmlessly past at a distance of about 30,000 miles from Earth's center (or 26,000 miles from its surface), he said, based on the most recent observations and computations of the "miss distance." This would be the closest approach by a cosmic object this large in modern history.
Based on its projected track and its large size, the object has been added to the list of "potentially hazardous objects" that are monitored to determine whether they are destined to come dangerously close to Earth over the next several centuries.
There are 108 such objects on the list, but astronomers say they have detected only about a tenth of the estimated number of asteroids and comets larger than a kilometer in diameter (0.6 mile) whose orbits could intersect with Earth.

And, more strikingly, the corporate media have, during same period, pursued a campaign of vilification and ridicule of professional sightings - acting hand in hand with governments to completely wipe-out what was, for generations, an accepted and acceptable routine of straight factual reporting of UFOs.
