The principle role of the VLT is to operate as four independent telescopes, and the interferometry (combining light from multiple telescopes) is a minor secondary role.
The VLT is intended to achieve an effective angular resolution of 0.001 arcsecond at a wavelength of 1 µm, comparable to that achieved using other arrays such as the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer and the CHARA Array.
All the stars visible to the naked eye have temperatures of several thousand degrees, and have large enough surface brightnesses and angular sizes to be observed by the VLTI.

It is often said that an interferometer achieves the effect of a telescope the size of the distance between the apertures; this is only true in the limited sense of angular resolution.

Infrared astronomy is the branch of astronomy and astrophysics which deals with objects visible in infrared (IR) radiation.
For this reason, the near infrared region of the spectrum is commonly incorporated as part of the "optical" spectrum, along with the near ultraviolet (most scientific instruments such as optical telescopes cover the near infrared as well as the visible).
As infrared is esentially heat radiation, infrared telescopes (which include most major optical telescopes as well as a few dedicated infrared telescopes) need to have their detectors shielded from heat and chilled with liquid nitrogen in order to actually form images.
