Astronomical observations are not only relevant for astronomy as such, but provide essential information for the verification of fundamental theories in physics, such as general relativity theory.
Later, with the work of astronomers Kepler and Newton, whose work led to the development of celestial mechanics, the mathematical prediction of the motions of celestial bodies interacting gravitationally became the focus of astronomy.
East Asia's first astronomical observatory was developed in Silla, one of Three Kingdoms of Korea, under the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla.

Nearly all astronomers now have a strong background in physics, and the results of observations are usually put in an astrophysical context, so astronomy and astrophysics are used with a very close meaning.
Astronomy is not to be confused with astrology, a pseudoscience which attempts to predict a person's destiny by tracking the paths of astronomical objects.

In the late 10th century, a huge observatory was built near Tehran, Iran, by the astronomer al-Khujandi who observed a series of meridian transits of the Sun, which allowed him to calculate the obliquity of the ecliptic, also known as the tilt of the Earth's axis relative to the Sun.
He compiled many astronomical tables and performed a reformation of the calendar which was more accurate than the Julian and came close to the Gregorian.

 Big Bang
The details of how the process of galaxy formation occurred depends on the type of matter in the universe, and the three competing pictures of how this occurred are based on the properties of three types of matter known as cold dark matter, hot dark matter, and baryonic matter.
Earlier, in 1918, the Strasbourg astronomer Wirtz had measured a systematic redshift of certain "nebulae", and called this the K-correction, but he wasn't aware of the cosmological implications, nor that the supposed nebulae were actually galaxies outside our own Milky Way.
This data allowed astronomers to calculate many of the parameters of the Big Bang to new precision and opened up a major unexpected finding that the expansion of the universe appears to be accelerating.

SingaporeMoms - Parenting Encyclopedia - Cosmic microwave background radiation
The period after the emission of the CMB and the observation of the first stars is semi-humorously referred to by cosmologists as the dark age, and is a period which is under intense study by astronomers.
The interpretation of the CMB was a very controversial issue in the 1960s with some proponents of the steady state theory arguing that the CMB was the result of scattered starlight from distant galaxies.
Among the observations that swung the astronomical community toward this point of view were the fact that the CBR was much smoother than would be expected from scattered star light.

A particular emphasis of this list is all aspects of astronomical observing, from results of Hubble Space Telescope observations to planning and performing amateur meetings, from discussion of observing techniques to the light polution problem.
While open for any discussion on any aspect of conventional, or orthodox, astronomy (including related fields), this list is not for discussing religion (including creation), astrology, esoterics, new theories and exotic unorthodox physics, politics, or other threads not related to the science of astronomy.
