Any practical video format is already heavily compressed, and I have found that squeezing even a few seconds of the videos I have made down to a size suitable for downloading reduces the quality severely.
The other meaning of "compression" in the audio world is a process where large changes in volume are flattened out, during the recording process or in the studio; this is particularly done for radio broadcasts.
