Gasoline (or petrol) is a petroleum-derived liquid mixture consisting primarily of hydrocarbons, used as fuel in internal combustion engines.
This is because higher-octane fuels allow for a higher compression ratio - this means less space in a cylinder on its combustion stroke, hence a higher cylinder temperature, less wasted hydrocarbons (therefore less pollution and wasted energy), and therefore higher power levels coupled with less pollution overall because of the greater efficiency.
Their report entitled "Technical Report 145-45 Manufacture of Aviation Gasoline in Germany" chemically analyzed the different fuels and concluded that "Toward the end of the war the quality of fuel being used by the German fighter planes was quite similar to that being used by the Allies".

Using a fuel with a higher octane allows the engine to be run at higher compressions, and not have problems with knock.
Because the mixture known as gasoline has a tendency to explode or "knock", lead additives were first blended with fuel in the 1920s, and continued through the 1980s.
By war's end their aviation fuel was commonly 130 to 150 octane, which could easily be put to use in existing engines to deliver much more power by increasing the compression delivered by the superchargers.

Nat' Academies Press, Automotive Fuel Economy: How Far Can We Go? (1992)
Although properly designed fuel economy standards would not necessarily constitute a competitive disadvantage to U.S. automotive companies (see Chapter 9), new fuel economy standards that are extremely costly to implement or that greatly distort the normal product cycle of the industry would place an enormous financial burden on domestic automakers.
Investments in fuel economy technologies that force the early retirement of models or components, or that must be accomplished outside the planned spending cycles, could place an untenable financial burden on domestic automakers.
Fuel prices are much higher in Europe and Japan than in the United States, which creates incentives for the automobile industry there to pursue fuel economy improvements aggressively.
