Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born July 18, 1918) is a former President of South Africa, and was one of its chief anti-apartheid activists.
Rolihlala Mandela was born in Qunu in the Transkei.
Mandela was also criticized for his close friendship with dictators such as Fidel Castro and Moammar Al Qadhafi, whom he called his "comrades in arms." His decision to commit South African troops to defeat the 1998 coup of Lesotho also remains a topic of some controversy.

Formerly known as Sandton Square, it was renamed Nelson Mandela Square on 31 March 2004 after a 6-metre statue of Nelson Mandela was installed on the grounds to honour the famous South African statesman.
The renaming celebration and the unveiling of the statue was to mark the 10th anniversary of the complex, and also commemorates the first decade of democracy in South Africa.
