 Karlovy Vary Film Festival
Karlovy Vary experienced a brief resurgence in the wake of 1989's Velvet Revolution, which ended 40 years of Communist rule and allowed the festival to screen previously banned films, but that was followed quickly by 1993's Velvet Divorce, which saw Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Stability has allowed the festival, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, to simultaneously play host to A-list celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, honor acclaimed directors like Israel's Amos Gitai and attract dedicated film students who camp out in front of theater doors in hope of capturing free seats to sold-out screenings.
The upgrade reflects East of the West's reputation for plucking great movies from obscurity and the fact that the film industry finally has moved beyond its 1990s crisis years in those nations.
