Kipling's first acquaintance with the Royal Navy would seem to have been as a child in 1872-4, during the six year period when he was living in the "House of Desolation" in lodgings in Southsea, Hampshire.
From 1865 onwards all battleships were, indeed, made of iron, but they utilized a great deal of timber in their construction, not merely for decks and partitions and their multitude of boats, but for their armour which was a sandwich of iron on the outside and inside, with teak in between.
The Navy Lists show that Alert was in Devonport (Navy List (NL) for 20 Sept. `74), and arrived in Portsmouth sometime between then and 20 December `74 (NL for that date has her marked as 'Portsmouth'): while Discovery was purchased to act as a storeship for the proposed expedition on 5 December `74.

A third Ark Royal entered service in 1938 and originally she was to have been joined by three sisterships, but more of the Illustrious Class were built instead.
This attack effectively eliminated the Italian Navy but perhaps more significantly it demonstrated the power, ability and potential of the carrier and the attack was used as a model by the Japanese for their devastating attack on Pearl Harbour.
Due to the severe manpower problems that the navy faced it was decide d that only two carriers could be kept operational at any one time with the third either in reserve or long refit.

With the retiring of heavy battleships, the U.S. Navy has clearly indicated heavy cannon fire at sea is no longer a valid method of warfare, and Tomahawk land attack missiles have replaced the bigger guns for land attack as well.

 USS Royal
Royal (AMc-102) was laid down on 1 November 1941 by Anderson and Cristofani, San Francisco, Calif., launched 19 March1942, sponsored by Miss Irma Bianehi, and placed in service on 13 April 1942.
Following training in the San Francisco area, Royal remained in the 12th Naval District, based at Treasure Island.
She was placed out of service on 30 November 1945, struck from the Navy list on 3 January 1946 and sold, via the War Shipping Administration, on 9 September 1947.

In the wake of the 1823 Greek naval defeat at Bodrum, however, the Greek Navy turned to privateering to support the revolt, and attacked merchantmen-including American merchantmen.
By the end of 1828, Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard tactfully reported that "due to the restraints of the existing authorities in Greece; and the system of convoy," the threat to American commerce from the Greek pirates had been eliminated.
Thus, the US Navy and the Greek Navy have continued to operate together, carrying out the policies of their governments and demonstrating the congruence of those policies on many occasions.

The Swordfish, swooping, skimmed the placid waters of the harbour, roared towards battleships lying helpless at their moorings.

The battleship departed 24 March for Norfolk and operated off the east coast until fall, calling at a number of large ports, serving as a training ship for Naval Militia, and engaging in maneuvers and exercises designed to keep the ship and crew in the finest possible fighting turn.
Returning to the United States, the battleship operated off the Atlantic coast, basing alternately out of Philadelphia and Norfolk for the next year and 2 months, serving as a training ship and conducting operational exercises.
Following exercises with the 4th Battleship Division off New England, she returned to Philadelphia Navy Yard where she was put in the 1st Reserve 1 August 1912.
