Same-sex marriage in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United States, proponents of equal marriage rights for same-sex couples observe that there are over 1,049 federal laws in which marital status is a factor, as well as state and private benefits (family memberships, discounts, etc) denied same-sex couples by excluding them from participating in marriage.

 Wikinfo | Federal Marriage Amendment
The Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution that would assert a federal definition of marriage as a heterosexual union of a man and a woman.
Proponents claim that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, not a civil rights issue, and preserve the current authority of state legislatures over all questions of benefits.
Another opposing force are states' rights advocates, who oppose a law that would federalize marriage, which since the founding of the country, has traditionally been under the purview of the individual states.
