Once upon a time the bestseller lists in the book review sections of the Fairfax papers were compiled from a few mostly inner city upmarket bookstores, probably the shops frequented by people who read the literary pages in Saturday newspapers.
A study of The New York Times bestseller list indicated that for known authors appearance on the list could be worth an extra 13% or 14% in sales over a year, but for new authors it was a huge 57% extra.
The bestseller lists in the newspaper book pages should track the kinds of books their readers are likely to be interested in, rather than the books that everyone else reads.

And the trend towards artists releasing relatively longer (CD-length) albums spaced a few years apart has resulted in more "mega-albums" that continue to spin off hits and run up their sales totals long after a '70s artist would have closed the book and moved on to a new album.
It was basically impossible for an album from the '60s or '70s to sell anywhere near the number of copies during its run as a current release as a typical big hit album from today does, and few albums from any era enjoy enough catalog sales to make up that kind of defecit.
The few older albums that score high on the list are releases that have long histories of very heavy catalog sales, many of them not individual studio releases but greatest-hits compilations.
