The book goes into great detail on fishing knots (ie tying a very large hook to a rope) which I find annoying, but could be very helpful for a deep sea fisherman.
The key is to practice a handful of knots so you can do them in the dark, or in a storm, when you really need them.
The Morrow Guide to Knots is a wonderfully descriptive instruction manual to tie many useful and also decorative knots.

This book is written by a member of the International Guild of Knot Tiers and is quite extensive.
Not only does it give the basics of knot tieing but it moves into the the more advanced portions in later parts of the book.
The section on globe knots doesn't tell how to work the sphere into the center and a few diagrams are wrong (pg 141 step one-two).

I was able to make it by carefully laying out a piece of rope, but I have no idea how I would make this knot in a situation where both ends of the line aren't free.

A great book, with great color illustrations, some information about rope, and which knots are good for which activities or goals.
Pawson's _Handbook of Knots_ is indespensible to the marlinspike sailor, and a useful tool for those who just want to know more about ropework.
The book is organized by type of knot (stopper knots, binding, bends, hitches, loops, plaits and sennits) and has quite a bit about rope care, use, and splicing.
