Biochemistry is the study of the chemical reactions and interactions that take place in living organisms, especially the structure and function of their components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules present in cellss.
Biochemistry could also (now) be defined as being the chemistry of enzyme-mediated reactions, whether in vivo or in the test tube, with natural or artificially modified enzymes and other chemicals.
For historical reasons, the biochemistry of metabolism has been one of the most extensively described aspect of the cell.

So biochemistry is quite naturally an interdisciplinary subject, requiring knowledge and skill in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computers.
On of the major rewards of biochemistry is that many pieces in the puzzle of your previous studies fall into place when you study biochemistry.
Learning Strategies are divided into topics that correspond to the major subjects in Biochemistry and Biochemistry II (CHY 361-3) at the University of Southern Maine, but this topic list will be similar to that of many biochemistry courses.

As this list implies, I suggest delaying a rigorous treatment of biotechnology (cloning, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, gene chips) and bioinformatics until near the end of the course, after coverage of molecular biology.
However, If you use VVP and take this approach, you may find that the material in Chapter 3 of VVP on biotechnology is not sufficiently molecular (or challenging) for students who have worked through Chapter 27.
Starting in spring of 2003, I greatly reduced the coverage of these topics in order to eliminate overlap with molecular biology and genetics courses.
