Birding is a hobby concerned with the observation and study of birds (the science proper is termed ornithology).
The most active times of the year for birding in the temperate zones are during spring and fall migration, when the greatest variety of birds may be seen, as many species that do not nest or overwinter in given areas may be observed as they make their way north or south.
Many birders take part in censuses of bird populations and their migratory patterns which are sometimes specific to individual species and sometimes count all the birds in a given area (as in a Christmas Bird Count).

In some birds the color of their down and/or feathers is a direct indication of what sex they are.
Other birds have no link between their feather color and sex at all and need a blood test run to determine male or female status.

He was so excited about birds, he would spend days at a time in "the bush" studying their field marks, habits and vocalizations long before he ever owned, or knew about field guides or binoculars.
Sheridan Coffey began birding at the age of eight when she identified a Red-winged Blackbird in the field behind her house in West Chester, PA. Now living in San Antonio Texas, she has led trips throughout the state for various birding groups, including for the ABA at their convention in Beaumont in 2001.

The squirrels feed quite often with the Crow’s, other birds such as Cardinal’s, Thrasher’s, Blue Jay’s and such are allowed to flit in and out, sometimes feeding at the edges of the feeding circle.
They shower in the sprinkler, get sopping wet, and then sunbathe with all feathers standing on end, what a sight this is. I think all the birds enjoy the sprinkler although the Thrasher’s seem to prefer a dirt bath.
They love crunchy foods but also go straight for the water with it, whether it be a convenient mud hole, one of the bird bath’s or the waterfall of the pond area.

Papers dealing exclusively with domestic and pet birds and their husbandry are excluded unless they are applicable to non-domestic birds.
