Chapter 2 - How to Play Wargames - The Technical Terms Used in Wargaming
Wargames are actually only one subgroup of the much broader group of games which in theory includes all situations involving struggle between two or more opposing forces.
While wargames allow the player to take the place of the original commander, in some situations the actual location of the commander (or his subordinates) was vital and this is represented by playing pieces representing the leaders.
This is a wargaming technique with a close analogy in history, where it is known as the "secondary attack" and serves the same purpose of distracting the enemy from your more important, or "primary" attack.

 Wargaming
The modern commercial board wargaming industry is considered to have begun with the publication of Tactics II in 1958, and the founding of The General Magazine by the Avalon Hill Game Company in the early 1960s.
Wargames, like all games, exist in a range of complexities: some are fundamentally simple (so-called "beer-and-pretzel" games), while others (generally in an attempt to increase the 'realism' of the situation) produce rule sets that may encompass a large variety of actions (so-called "monster" games).
Wargame simulations can usually be categorized according to the type of technology available to the 'armies' involved, the branch(es) of the military, the period of military history, and the unit size or map scale.

This generally lowers the price of non-simulator wargames as they are also much cheaper to develop as they do not have to push, or even keep up with, the state of the art in graphics.
Wargames, even simulators, use a lot less, so wargames will be able to do a lot more with the enormous resources available in the upcoming CD type games.
Both of these operations present a list of products that they know, from experience, sells to the "wargame market." Not all of their products are wargames.

These first wargames were played with dice which represented "friction", or the intrusion of less than ideal circumstances during a real war (including morale, meteorology, the fog of war, etc).
The first modern mass-market wargame, based on cardboard counters and hex maps, was invented by Charles S. Roberts in 1952 called Tactics; he went on to found the Avalon Hill game company, and is called "The father of board wargaming".

One thing you will notice is that the analysis of wargames is not the dry, systematic, mathematical (which, admittedly, some people get off on) analysis that you have in chess or other abstract games.
Because the games demand such realism and accuracy in their historical information, players get the feeling that they are participating in a study of human events, which is exactly what they are doing.
There are so many hundreds of unconscious decisions being made when any one of these situations is being analyzed, that it is a truly creative act when one player comes up with an analysis of the particular turn of the game that is demonstrably superior to another player's analysis.
