IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
Botanists were excited by the discovery of a new conifer, Xanthocyparis vietnamensis, in Viet Nam in 2001, but the species has been assessed as Endangered based on its restricted range and ongoing deforestation in the area.
This year's Red List update comes soon after the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress in Durban, South Africa, which heard that although good progress is being made in increasing the world's protected area estate, more than 700 animal species threatened with extinction are not protected in any part of their ranges.
The 1996 List revealed that one in four mammal species and one in eight bird species face extinction, while the 2000 List confirmed that the global extinction crisis is as bad or worse than believed.

Plants of Southern California: Trail Guides
Botanists have found that the number of taxa in a given area scales with the area to roughly the 1/3 power.
In this case, botanists follow the same convention as astronomers - the first assigned name is retained for one of the newly-separated species, and a new name is given to the newly-recognized species.
Botanists always preserve an example of a new species that is given a name for the first time.

Yreka Phlox, A Rare California Plant, List as Endangered   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Listed species are provided a variety of conservation measures under the ESA including increased public awareness and recognition, development of recovery plans and strategies, requirements for Federal protection, and prohibitions against certain activities.
The ESA prohibits destruction of listed plants on Federal land, but provides little protection from activities on private lands unless the activity is federally, administered, authorized, or funded or is in violation of any State law.
Federal listing brings with it affirmative responsibilities for Federal agencies to use their authorities to conserve listed species to levels where protection under the Federal ESA is no longer necessary.

Bonnie Isaac, a botanist from Pittsburgh's Carnegie Museum of Natural History found a group of unusual plants a few years ago, and by studying them closely realized they actually were the elusive Crepidinea.
It grows out on a floodplain in the summer when there's other really tall plants growing there, and it's in among stinging nettle, and poison ivy, and mosquitoes and all kinds of things that you know, people don't really want to go there.
Isaac says her two years of research have helped removed the plant from Pennsylvania's threatened species list -- which lets botanists focus on plants that really do need special attention.
