Overview   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
For each List 3 plant we have provided the known information, indicated in the Note where assistance is needed, and tentatively assigned the taxon to a more definite list.
This may be particularly appropriate for the type locality of a List 4 plant, for populations at the periphery of a species' range or in areas where the taxon is especially uncommon or has sustained heavy losses, or for populations exhibiting unusual morphology or occurring on unusual substrates.
Abbreviations that are commonly used in the notes are explained on the inside front cover.

Scientific classification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The term methodists was coined by Carolus Linnaeus in his Bibliotheca Botanica to denote the authors who care about the principles of classification (in contrast to the mere collectors who are concerned primarily with the description of plants paying little or no attention to their arrangement into genera, etc).
Important early methodists were an Italian philosopher, physician, and botanist Andrea Caesalpino, an English naturalist John Ray, a German physician and botanist Augustus Quirinus Rivinus, and a French physician, botanist, and traveller Joseph Pitton de Tournefort.
These names are frequently abbreviated: the abbreviation "L." is universally accepted for Linnaeus, and in botany there is a regulated list of standard abbreviations (see list of botanists by author abbreviation).

Plants of Southern California: Trail Guides
Botanists have found that the number of taxa in a given area scales with the area to roughly the 1/3 power.
In this case, botanists follow the same convention as astronomers - the first assigned name is retained for one of the newly-separated species, and a new name is given to the newly-recognized species.
Botanists always preserve an example of a new species that is given a name for the first time.

This list was compiled from several published sources and from specimens in the Oregon State University Herbarium (OSC), Willamette University Herbarium (WI LLU) and the University of Oregon Herbarium (ORE), all of which are housed at Oregon State University.
List of taxa of uncertain standing: this includes names applied to herbarium specimens for which we cannot easily track synonymy, taxa mentioned in various sources but not fully documented, and other names of taxa of uncertain disposition.
Authors not included in the document should be spelled out fully as they appear in the original publication or other source and a note be included to indicate that a standard abbreviation is needed.

 MPF - meaning of word
I suspect that because a lot of botanists were distincly unspecialised, I have ended up "category-swamping" a few of them and therefore it is unlikely that the categorisation scheme will hold for long.
Actually keeping "Botanists studying fungi" distinct from "Mycologists" is probably a good idea for now, since those in the former category were often rather part-time mycologists and the in the latter rather more full-time.
However, sometimes the IPNI abbreviation is hard to find if you only have the name to work from (their search engine isn't the best!).

Plant Science Bulletin - June 1970, Volume 16, Issue 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The author has avoided an intentional focus on basic concepts and principles of plant pathology, mechanisms of pathogenesis, and definition of terms, and, instead, has concentrated on etiology, symptoms, and control of a systematic listing of plant diseases.
Each abbreviation listed is cross-referenced to a recommended abbreviation followed by a concise statement of the title in full, changes in name and numbering of volumes, original place of publication, the number of volumes published, and years of publication.
As abbreviations used by most botanists are included in the Periodical Listing, this appendix may seem superfluous but many ephemeral government leaflets, congress publications, and newly created serials not listed may be cited in botanical publications.
