To determine which bridges are most likely to have historic significance, LTAP is reviewing the National Bridge Inventory database, publications by Dr. James Cooper, reviewing Indiana bridges listed in the NRHP, and asking County Commissioners, County Historians, and Indiana Department of Transportation District Directors which bridges they believe have historic significance.
The consultant will analyze this population of bridges and recommend to the Federal Highway Administration and the State Historic Preservation Officer a list of bridges that should be considered eligible for the NRHP and a list of bridges that should not be considered eligible for the NRHP.

If a bridge has catenary/parabolic cables aided by stays, I usually include the bridge as long as the stays are clearly not the primary means of support.
Catwalk, gangway, ribbon, sagging, "droopy" bridges (where the deck sags along the curve of the cables) are generally omitted unless they have historical importance.
Such suspension bridges are those that have a droopy deck, or those where the deck rests directly on the cables.

They say inspectors examine the nation's bridges every two years and spans deemed deficient are closed or posted for vehicles with lower weights.
In 2001, the percentage of deficient bridges dropped to 28% (14% were found structurally deficient, and 14% were deemed obsolete).
