Bucharest (population 2.3 million, Romanian: Bucureşti) is the capital city and industrial and commercial centre of Romania, located in the southeast of the country, on the Dâmboviţa river.
The legend says that Bucharest was founded by a shepherd named Bucur, another variant, more likely, is that it was established by Mircea cel Bătrân in the 14th century after a victory won over the Turks (bucurie means joy in Romanian, for this reason Bucharest is often called "The City of Joy.").
Bucharest is first mentioned under its present name as a residence in 1459 of the Walachian prince Vlad Ţepeş (Vlad the Impaler).

Bucharest is a very hard city to drive in (potholes, irregular cobblestones, aggressive drivers, beggars at traffic lights, lack of parking) and it is compact enough that you will probably be on foot most of the time.
Bucharest beggars can be a bit persistent, but almost all will settle for very small amounts of money: 1000 lei (about 3 US cents) or almost any item of food is typically (though not always) well received.
Bucharest is not a big nightlife city like Berlin or Madrid, but on the other hand it doesn't exactly go to sleep at sundown.

A large portion of the capital, Bucharest, was torn down to make way for the Casa Poporului (now House of Parliament) complex and Centrul Civic (Civic Center), but the December 1989 Revolution left much of the huge complex unfinished, such as a new National Library and the National Museum of History.
Even the Gara de Nord, one of the most beautiful train stations in the world, listed among The Romanian Architectural Heritage List, was scheduled to be torn down and replaced by a new one in early 1992.
Many of Bucharest's landmarks have since been partially repaired and consolidated, starting with the Gara de Nord in 1993, the Palace of Justice in 1997, and the University in 1999, but most and buildings are in severe need of reconstruction even today.

Sofia is similar to Bucharest in the sence of maintenance, they are both not exactly clean.
bucharest could be considered more interesting as it has a huge collection of megalomaniac stalinist buildings (so megalomaniac they were finnished in the 80's), but sofia has Vitosha, a wonderful mountain right near it, so it's more of a choice for nature-lovers.
Btw,beautiful athens pics(I know Athens is a more popular tourist destination than Bucharest and Sofia,statistics proove this but there may be some other beautiful cities(like Bucharest,Sofia) which are not discovered widely yet by tourists,maybe this poll is a chance to learn more about them...thank you guys for voting...
