There are two main types of canal: irrigation canals for the delivery of water and transportation canals for passage of goods and people.
Canals are so deeply identified with Venice that many canal cities have been nicknamed "the Venice of..." The city is built on marshy islands, with wooden piles supporting the buildings, so that here it is not so much the waterways which are man-made, as the land.
In Europe and then in the young United States, inland canals preceded the development of railroads during the earliest phase of the Industrial Revolution; some canals were later drained and used as railroad rights-of-way.

 Canals and Railroads at the American Antiquarian Society
Some four thousand miles of canals were built between 1815 and 1860, chiefly in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; with the Erie Canal the most successful, but strong regional rivalries prevented the development of a national canal system.
All of the primary source canal material is cataloged, as are most of the secondary works on both canals and railroads.
Other canal and railroad material is found in many broadside advertisements, lithographs, maps and charts, railroad bonds, passes and tickets, and sheet music, located in the graphic arts department.

 Railroad Maps of the United States.
In the Library's collections are maps from the earliest era of railroad mapmaking, Henry Schenck Tanner's "Map of the Canals and Rail Roads of the United States," dated 1830, is an early general map, depicting "working lines" on the eastern seaboard and in Kentucky, Alabama, and Louisiana.
Numerous maps of the United States and individual states and counties were made which clearly indicated the sections of the granted land and the railroad rights-of-way.
This statement, however, does not seem applicable to the large and detailed map of 1876 which indicates drainage, relief by hachures, international, state and county boundaries, cities and towns, railroad stations, canals, roads, trails, a comprehensive railroad network, and railroads under construction.

As such we are coordinating with state, local and other federal government agencies (especially the US Coast Guard) to prevent, minimize, or mitigate threats to public health, welfare, or the environment caused by the actual or potential release of hazardous materials.
All three states that were primarily affected by Hurricane Katrina were authorized in the mid-1980s to implement the hazardous waste provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which regulate hazardous waste disposal in lieu of the Federal government.
However, the affected states, with EPA support, are already providing guidance to their citizens and industry on how to safely segregate, handle and dispose of hazardous materials and other debris.

 Killing Legally with Toxic Wastes in the United States
As a result of protest and outrage, the state of California was forced to stop releasing toxic wastes into nearby streams and compensate the citizens whose health was damaged by exposure to these chemicals.
Between 1978 and 1980, the people of the Love Canal neighborhood in New York state discovered that their homes were built over a toxic waste dump abandoned by Hooker Chemical.
Because of the still growing list of newly discovered dangerous sites and the high cost and technical difficulty of cleaning up these sites, the government had managed only to clean up a very few of the now thousands of toxic waste sites in the United States.

Ristow says the first edition was 1834, and while that was the first issue of the enlarged guide with text, this 1825 map is from the same plate as the 1834 map and thus should be seen as the first edition of the guide.
The entire lower right corner of the map is taken up with lists of "Steam Boat Routes Throughout the United States," which are keyed to letters in the map margins.
In the 1834 and later editions, these lists are replaced with inset maps of U.S. cities, and the lists are given, along with added stage and railroad routes, in the body of the text.
