I look back at the Fright Night event of 1999 a little wistfully, because I see the primeval webcomic jam shindig as perhaps the last time a truly innocent and non-agenda-obsessed group of webcartoonists got together to do something entertaining and original with NO other motive than to just have fun.
If you look at the list of names there, you will see a healthy mixture of both marquee and unknown monikers there – particularly, you'll see the granddaddy of them all, Pete Abrams, in that list.

I read his stuff religiously back in high school, and my first cartoon for my college newspaper was a bizarre and failed attempt to rip off his style, featuring a cute talking lizard translating the attempts of the undergraduate council to bring ROTC to campus (I was only 18, I didn't know any better!).
She's been chronicling the lives and loves of a large cast of characters, lesbian and otherwise, in her bi-weekly cartoon soap opera for over two decades now, and her artwork, characterization, story-telling and political commentary are without compare.

As someone who's been nominated as well as someone who hasn't had a chance to read all of the nominated comics....I'd like to be able to read the comics BEFORE I vote.
I don't begrudge the final nominees one bit, but I think that some advertising of the impending awards could have really widened the field, not to mention the final list.
I know of a great many web cartoonists who knew nothing about the WCC Awards in the first place, let alone that they were going on right now.
