The Bank of Canada added its name to the ever lengthening list of central banks that have cut their policymaking interest rate.
The Bank had lowered its benchmark rate on February 8 for the first time in 20 months by 25 basis points to 5.75 percent and said it would review the need for a further cut, given signs of stalling U.S. economic growth.
Banks are rushing to sell stocks because in the next fiscal year new accounting rules mean all their investments will be valued at market value instead of the much higher book value.

On Wednesday, March 23, the Russian Central Bank announced that it had completed the compilation of a list of “safe” banks that have been admitted into a new deposit insurance scheme aimed at improving savers’ trust in the banking system.
Among the banks excluded from the deposit insurance system are 16 of Russia’s 100 largest banks which altogether hold personal deposits worth some $350 million.
The banks have said, however, that exclusion from the Central Bank’s list has not had a negative influence on their work so far and that they plan to appeal the decision before the September review.
