Characters' lives largely revolve around items and ideas of popular culture incorporated into everyday conversation and events.
Often initiated when a character refers to a past event (accompanied by phrases such as "like that time when...", "I haven't felt like this since...", or "This is worse than the time..."), these sketches are wildly divergent in topic—ranging from classic film scenes to historical events to contemporary television commercials.

Modamag.com | American Wedding (Movie Review)
“American Pie’s” cornerstones have been the gigantic gross-out gags; ranging from Stiffler’s lethal beer-and-semen cocktail in “Pie 1,” to Jim’s hand-to-penis superglue incident in “Pie 2.” Herz seems all too aware of the pressure on him to deliver the ick, and his desire to up the ante in “Wedding” doesn’t pan out.
Herz is in love with these characters, and it shows, but his attempt to merge every quality that worked in the initial two outings is bungled just a bit, leaving a slight bitter aftertaste to the “Wedding” cake.
While many characters and situations are altered in “American Wedding,” the largest change to the series comes in the form of Steven Stiffler.

Variety also points out that signing up American Dad to a fourth season is significant because it will give the series a total of 84 episodes, which means that 20th Century Television can start to package the show for syndication.
American Dad follows an offbeat family in Langley Falls, Virginia, where the father, Stan Smith, is an overeager CIA agent, who decided to save the alien Roger from the government, as well as a German spy named Klaus, whose brain was transplanted into a goldfish.
As for the rest of the family, Stan's wife Francine is a typical housewife with dreams of adventure, the daughter Hayley is a liberal do-gooder, always at odds with her father and the son, Steve is an awkward kid making his way through his geeky years, while looking up to his hero, Stan.

 Filmtracks: Dad (James Horner)
Dad: (James Horner) A story about the self-discovery of an average, modern American family, Dad is another lesson on how to and how not to take care of your parents once they reach the age of senility.
A busy banker in the big city is forced to take leave to attend to his ailing parents and the "coming together" experience helps heal years of distant relationships and the story shows the audience about how older folks can learn to cope with their illnesses and other age-related problems.
The opening bars of "Taking Dad Home" feature perhaps the most explosive outburst of emotion, as heard during a pivotal sequence in the film during which Lemmon's character is literally carried out a hospital by his son (Ted Danson) with Hollywood flair (a moment that ruined the film for some critics, it might be added).

American Dad is another brilliant show from the makers of family guy.
American Dad is a sharp, up-to-date, imaginative cartoon rivalling the supremecy of Family Guy's reign of american cartoons, and, whilst not as thick in jokes as some episodes of Family Guy it makes up for it by making jokes on many current affairs and by being brilliantly satirical when it comes to politics in America.
Also the characters outside the family in American Dad are less, so there is less stories to tell and makes all the jokes weighted upon the family.

Family Guy / American Dad | PopMatters Television Review
MacFarlane calls American Dad "a cross between Family Guy and All in the Family." This may be what he was aiming for, but American Dad is not interested in dealing with topical specifics or Archie-Bunkerish self-doubt.
Worse, the timetable for studio animation is slow, which means that American Dad's political jokes are dated as soon as they're written (unlike, say, the humor of late night talk shows or the current pace-setter, The Daily Show).
American Dad, setting itself as politically oriented from the start, doesn't make smart use of the family structure.

 American Beauty: Cinephiles Movie Review
American Beauty, directed by British theater director Sam Mendes (Cabaret, The Blue Room) and written by Alan Ball, is a film which focuses on a suburban-American family, portraying its characters' dysfunctional relationships as a direct symptom of their dissenting conceptions of beauty.
As its title implies, the film begs the question "What is American beauty?" and without providing a concrete answer, it explores the endemic problems haunting many contemporary families: consumerism, unemployment, drugs, peer pressure, loneliness, discrimination and violence.
Having revealed the fatal outcome, what follows is a brief view of the final days of Lester's frustrated life; of his wife Carolyn's (Annette Bening) systematic belittling of him and all things associated with him; and of their daughter's (Thora Birch) overpowering contempt towards both of them.

 American Wedding doesn't appeal
The guest list for American Wedding could be formidable over the weekend, given the reputation the previous films in the series -- American Pie and American Pie 2 -- have garnered.
American Wedding revolves around the wedding of Jim (Brigs), the good guy who always seems to mess things up, and his college sweetheart Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), who wants a perfect, picture postcard marriage.
Among the interesting characters carried in from the previous film is Jim's dense dad (Eugene Levy), who continually dispenses well-meaning but at times clueless advice.

Unfortunately, it attempts this by simply installing mirror characters in a new town and placing a political spin on everything by making the father an ultra-conservative CIA agent.

American Dad, from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, is the animated story of Stan Smith, who works for the CIA and is constantly on the alert for terrorist activity.
That's where "American Dad" comes in - an outlet for the makers' exasperation with the state of contemporary America, it pulls no punches in its portrayal of laughable CIA agent Stan and his dysfunctional family.
The characters of "American Dad" are not nearly as well developed as those of "Family Guy", yet it's emphasis is far more on its satirical.
