But The Sopranos really approaches the bloodthirst of the Gods, their cruelty, their indifference to mere mortals...and their so, so human traits mixed in with their almost unbearable inhumanity.
Now, I'm pretty sure this analogy to the Gods in The Sopranos is not done purposefully by the David Chase...he might have an awareness, sure, he's incredibly smart, but he's NOT making allusions to specifics...it's not an algorithm.
The Sopranos is at the bottom of it, deeply moral.

Characters are almost always at the center of fictional texts, especially novels and plays.
Some 18th and 19th century texts, on the other hand, represent characters' Names by the use of a single letter and a long dash (this convention is also used for other proper nouns, such as place names).
The protagonist (main character, sometimes known as the "hero" or the "heroine") of a novel is certain to be a Round character; a minor, supporting character in the same novel may be a Flat character.

Sopranos, The (HBO) - Reviews from Metacritic
The thing about "The Sopranos" is that strands of character detail -- Carmela Soprano's fingernails, the way Tony breathes through his nose when he eats -- stay with you long after you've forgotten whose cut of a garbage route has precipitated a beef between which wiseguys.
The first 4 episodes of season 6 were good with tony in the hospital being shot by his uncle junior, and his coma dreams were metaphorical (just the way I like them), but the rest of the episodes, and I mean all of them, were unlike the absolutely fantastic episodes of season one.
The list of disappointing, wastes of time that run rampid throughout the episodes this year are astounding.

The Sopranos has been consistently hailed as one of the best shows on television, being named the top drama series of All-Time by TV Guide, #5 on their Top 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time list (behind only Seinfeld, I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, and All in the Family).
This perhaps signifies that the characters are so recognizable that people viewing the ad don't need to see the words "The Sopranos" to know what it is. Early sixth season promotional posters just had the premiere date of "March 12" with a hand holding a gun replacing the "r" in March.

While the book's conceit is playfully written by Rucker (The Sopranos: A Family History) in the voice of each character, the recipes, by Scicolone (Italian Holiday Cooking), are solid and honest-to-goodness Italian-American dishes.
In a conversation with Bucco, Carmela Soprano reveals her Sicilian upbringing through such recipes as `Shcarole and Garlic (sauteed escarole), while scale-tipping Bobby Bacala pontificates on the importance of sweets and offers his own way to make Cannoli.

The Sopranos, writer-producer-director David Chase's extraordinary television series, is nominally an urban gangster drama, but its true impact strikes closer to home: Like 1999's other screen touchstone, American Beauty, the HBO series chronicles a dysfunctional, suburban American family in bold relief.
Livia is an interesting character, in that it took me the full first season to fully grasp that her character wasn't some wishy-washy old lady, but actually quite calculating.
