The full list of 50 heroes and 50 villains was unveiled on a CBS special last night studded with film clips, interviews and reminiscences about the characters who moved audiences to tears or terror.
Hollywood's attraction to real-life heroes is reflected by the presence of such characters as Gandhi, Gen. Patton, Erin Brockovich, Oskar Schindler, Frank Serpico and Karen Silkwood.
To draw up a list of 400 nominees, half heroic and half heinous, the AFI turned to its scholars, academics, historians and catalog staffers who record every movie ever made.

The synopses of the characters really do read like the various mythological dictionaries to be found- as has been said many times over the years the spandex heroes really are, in many ways, contemporary versions of the legendary heroes, of course in the case of Thor they are the legendary version as well!.
The majority of well known Marvel characters are fully detailed, including breakdowns of their respective strengths and weaknesses.
One of the most useful features is a list of recommended `essential' reading for each character- a great way to find some great comic books.

 Info and facts on 'Anti-hero'
Comic book (A magazine devoted to comic strips) s also feature anti-heroes, also known as "dark heroes", who are characters fighting for the side of good, but either with some tragic flaw (such as a tormented past) or by using questionable means to reach their goals.
These characters often keep a deep-seated optimism (The optimistic feeling that all is going to turn out well) that one day, they will succeed.
A good working definition of the anti-hero is a paradox ((logic) a self-contradiction) ical character who is, within the context of a story, a hero but in another context could easily be seen as a villain or simply as unlikable.

Briefs on the Outside: Super-Heroes® a Trademark of DC and Marvel
DC and Marvel would probably assert that, if you asked people to name "super heroes", most would recite a short list of Marvel- and DC-owned characters only.
DC, of course, still had a monthly Legion of Super-Heroes story in, um, ADVENTURE at the time, I think.
Marvel & DC have a history of failing to enforce their trademark, and this is just a selective application of said trademark.

In the early days of Marvel Comics it was quite easy to keep up with all the characters that appeared in your favorite comic book.
Then, as more issues were released, more heroes and villains were introduced, not to forget all the other secondary and supporting characters that appeared once in a while.

RJCyberware City of Heroes Badge List
Some of the badges in City of Heroes can only be earned during certain levels of your characters life, and it's very easy to miss a few along the way.
City of Heroes is particularly bad in this regard, because not only is there a lot of stuff to see, but much of it can be "outleveled", which means you are considered too experienced to go to that part of the game.
One major part of seeing the entirety of City of Heroes is collecting all the badges.

Greek mythology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greek mythology consists of a large collection of narratives detailing the lives and adventures of a wide variety of gods, goddesses, heroes, and heroines, which were first envisioned and disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition.
The span of stories and characters in Greek mythology ranges from the atrocities of the early gods to the brutal wars of Troy and Thebes, from the youthful pranks of Hermes to the heartfelt grief of Demeter for Persephone, all depicted in minute detail.
A Greek deity's epithet may reflect a particular aspect of that god's role, as Apollo Musagetes is "Apollo, [as] leader of the Muses." Alternatively the epithet may identify a particular and localized aspect of the god, sometimes thought to be already ancient during the classical epoch of Greece.

 Adventure Gamers : Discworld
Character animations are appropriately cartoony, although a little blocky at times, and show a lot of creativity, even when characters are just standing around.
For those unfamiliar with the background, the planet of Discworld is a flat plane soaring through space held up by four elephants standing on the back of a giant space turtle.
In my opinion (and isn't that the only one that really matters?), Discworld is seriously overlooked, and could easily have taken a place next to some of the best of the genre, though it stops short of being a classic simply due to its sheer difficulty and the unwieldy nature of the game.

He is not without help, however: the comic boasts a large ensemble cast of martial artist heroes and villains which provide the conflict that drives the story.
Dragon Ball GT is the sequel to DBZ but is not based on any manga (unlike Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, Akira Toriyama was not directly involved with the production of Dragon Ball GT, though he did create many of the character designs and a few of the plot ideas in the series).
Nearly every major character in the manga entered the series as a villain but was, through one method or another, converted to the side of good (often, this would entail a temporary team up to defeat a greater foe, but somehow the former enemies rarely found the motivation to begin fighting again).

The Power Rangers are also forbidden to disclose their identities to the general public, barring extenuating circumstances (although this rule was disregarded in Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue and Power Rangers: S.P.D. Power Rangers featured episodes which teamed up with other heroes from the Saban universe; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Masked Rider.
The franchise was purchased by Disney as a part of a Saban buyout between 2001 and 2002, and the show continued to air on Fox until its Fox Kids package was dismantled in the United States.

VE3D Boards - Marvel Sues Over City of Heroes
Marvel will get a settlement out of this, i'd almost guarantee it as someone else said they DO own the likeness of these characters and cryptic is in violation of those rights by allowing players to run around in a game they made copying those likenesses and profiting off of it.
Marvel Comics is attempting to sue the crap out of NCSoft and Cryptic Studios because you can create characters similar to the ones in their comics, and name them after their characters too:
Artists on Polycount already have to deal with Marvel sending them lovely emails saying they can't show off their character models for the public to download when they make re-creations of the characters of the Marvel universe.

Marvel Universe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marvel's major heroes (the ones who get involved in most of the important events) are the ones created from 1961 to 1963, during Marvel's "Silver Age": Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, Thor, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director, Nick Fury.
Note that in Marvel Comics, the concept of a continuity is not the same as "dimension" or "universe"; for example, characters like Mephisto and Dormammu hail from alternate dimensions and the Celestials from another universe, but they all nevertheless belong to Earth-616.
The New Universe was intended to be a more realistic, self-contained superhero universe, but due to a combination of a lack of editorial support and a general disinterest on the part of the readers, the line was cancelled after three years.

 TMU >>> opinion
We could spend a long weekend discussing a laundry list of Marvel heroes and discuss why they would or wouldn’t be right for a team-up book.
But they often stretch their creative credibility with projects featuring these properties that are obviously--either in perception or execution--mere attempts to cash in on these characters’ popularity.
For those that don’t remember, MARVEL TEAM-UP was a title that each month paired Spider-Man with a guest hero (and sometimes villain) from the depths of the large dusty vaults of the Marvel Universe.

The game will feature Super Heroes from the Marvel Universe as well as a new set of characters created through collaboration with EA and top comic book industry talent such as Jae Lee and Paul Catling.
There might be a couple of good reasons, Marvel might have some characters tied up in future movie/game deals that prevent EA from using them or EA might just want to promote their "original" characters hoping that they can spin just those characters off into games without having to rely on the Marvel license.
Gamers will have full control over the individual characters with each fighter having unique attributes and super powers that are true to their background, adding more depth and fighting strategy to the game.
