Philosopher William Godwin wrote "if ever there was a book calculated to make a man in love with its author, this appears to me to be the book." It influenced Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who drew on its themes and its aesthetic.
While the book initially inspired readers to travel to Scandinavia, it failed to retain its popularity after the publication of Godwin's Memoirs of the Author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman in 1798, which revealed Wollstonecraft's unorthodox private life.

Land of Oz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Land of Oz is roughly rectangular in shape, and divided along the diagonals into five countries: Munchkin Country in the East, Winkie Country in the West, Gillikin Country in the North, and Quadling Country in the South.
In the center of Oz, where the diagonals cross, is the fabled Emerald City, capital of the land of Oz and seat to the monarch of Oz, Princess Ozma.
Oz is completely surrounded on all four sides by a Deadly Desert, which insulates the citizens of Oz from discovery and invasion.

Oz is fairyland originally created by L. Frank Baum as stories he told his four sons and their friends.
Baum proceeded to write 14 Oz books, the first of which, _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz_, was published in 1900.
The _Bugle_ appears three times a year and specializes in popular and scholarly articles on Oz and its creators, biographical and critical studies, first edition checklists, research into the people and places within the Oz books, etc. The magazine is illustrated with rare photographs and drawings, and the covers are in full color.

The story and pictures make the book a perfect choice for a bedtime story, but I guarantee you won't be the only one wondering how Dorothy and her unique friends will ever get out of the trouble they get themselves into.
In the summer of 2000, exactly 100 years after the publication of "The Wizard of Oz," I was searching through a public library when I came upon a bookshelf with a group of books with a title each containing the word "Oz." I noticed they all had a numbers-from #1 to #14.
And of cource, in the very center of Oz is the green country, in which lies the famous Emerald City, the capital of Oz.

The remaining six books in the series were adaptations of Oz books: The Land of Oz, The Road to Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Rinkitink in Oz, and The Lost Princess of Oz.
How much an Oz book is worth depends on its edition (when it was printed, and in some cases by what publisher) and condition (how clean and well put-together it still is after all those years of enjoyment).
The current Books of Wonder reprints of the Baum Oz books have restored the color, and generally tried to make the books as close as possible to be facsimiles of the first editions.

The story line is not the best developed of the oz books but I still loved it and I think that Baum has created a series on par with the lord of rings and the narnia stories.
As typical of Baum, this book features a quest, as the Tin Man decides that he must marry the Munchkin girl that he left behind when he became rusted in the forest and eventually rescued by Dorothy and the Scarecrow.
Some of the plot twists in the latter part of the book, which concern the repercussions of Nick Chopper's transformation into a Tin Woodman, may be disturbing for some young readers; but the questions these events raise are fascinating and could lead children into interesting discussions with their parents about what makes a person himself.

Amazon.com: Books: The Annotated Wizard of Oz: A Centennial Edition   (Site not responding. Last check: )
This is an essential volume for the Oz aficionado or the student of children's literature, and a wonderful resource for parents of young readers.
The annotations can wander at times, perhaps unavoidably, into tenuous speculation or somewhat irrelevant asides, yet the book is invaluable in pointing out discrepancies that generations of children have wondered about (why the Munchkins live in the east of in some of the Oz books, at other times in the west).
Edited by Oz expert Michael Patrick Hearn, it's annotated in a manner similar to Martin Gardner's "Annotated Alice" (Gardner contributes a preface outlining the history of the "The Annotated Wizard of Oz").

Containing characters not only from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but from the second and third titles, The Marvelous Land Of Oz and Ozma Of Oz, the 169-page volume is composed of six short pieces, each teaming two of Baum's most popular Oz inhabitants.
I found it a definite pleaser as well, as books which allow children to enjoy being a child and actively use their imagination are very rare these days (as opposed to the more recent trend which aims at a precocious sophistication for a "miniature adult" audience).
