First, one might argue that strong female chess players are notably merely for their rarity.
Given the existence of women's events, as well as the historical preponderance of men at the top ranks of chess players, it's foreseeable that some readers would have an interest in seeing a list that pulled out the women from the main list.

It is a lifetime title, in chess literature usually abbreviated as GM or IGM (this is in contrast to WGM for Woman Grandmaster and IM for International Master).
The title "Grandmaster" was made popular by Russian Tsar Nicholas II who awarded it in 1914 to five players (Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Tarrasch and Marshall) after a tournament in Saint Petersburg which he had funded.

This happened because he made a bunch of money (reportedly 5 million dollars) playing chess in a war zone (Yugoslavia) when he staged a rematch with his former advesary Boris Spassky in 1992.
He won the match but has not stepped foot in the United States Since.
