The World Champion is not necessarily the highest rated player in the world: the current champion, Vladimir Kramnik is rated third in the world as per the current FIDE rating list.
The first match proclaimed by the players as for the world championship was the match that Wilhelm Steinitz won against Johannes Zukertort in 1886.
The latter match was to be held in Budapest, but funding collapsed; it was rescheduled as a fourteen game match held in Brissago, Switzerland from September 25 to October 18, 2004 and billed as the Classic World Chess Championship sponsored by the cigar company Dannemann.

The chess world was shaken in 1993 when Kasparov and the new challenger, Englishman Nigel Short, acted on their dissatisfaction with FIDE and formed a new organization to organize their world championship match.
The "Professional Chess Association" didn't last long but it was long enough to split the chess world and the divide still has not been repaired.

Devised by Professor Arpad Elo (1903 - 1993) of Milwaukee and adopted by FIDE in 1970.
A clock which, in addition to serving the usual functions of a Chess clock, adds a certain amount of time to each player's clock after each move, in order to avoid desperate time scrambles at the end of a game, which often result in poor moves.
