Haiti's economic stagnation is the result of earlier inappropriate economic policies, political instability, a shortage of good arable land, environmental deterioration, continued use of traditional technologies, undercapitalization, migration of large portions of the skilled population, and a weak national savings rate.
Haiti is a signatory to the Buenos Aires Convention of 1910 and the Paris Convention of 1883 with regard to patents; and to the Madrid Agreement with regard to trademarks.
Haiti's patent law dates from 1922 (Law of December 14, 1922); and its trademark law is the Law of July 17, 1954 on trademarks, as modified by decrees in 1956, 1960, and 1970.
