After the devastation of epidemics and war in the mid-1600s, which had largely emptied the Ohio country of indigenous people by the mid-to-late seventeenth century, the land gradually became repopulated by the mostly Algonquian-speaking descendants of its ancient inhabitants, that is, descendants of the Adena, Hopewell, and Mississippian cultures.
The climate of all of Ohio is a humid continental climate, although in the extreme southern counties along the Ohio River where the climate begins to border on the humid subtropical climate of the Southeastern United States.
Ohio was also a deciding factor in the 1948 presidential election when Democrat Harry S. Truman defeated Republican Thomas Dewey (who had won the state four years earlier) and in the 1976 presidential election when Democrat Jimmy Carter defeated Republican Gerald Ford by a slim margin in Ohio and took the election.

Slanted Pavement: How Ohio's Highway Spending Shortchanges Cities and Suburbs
The result in Ohio is a spatially skewed pattern of state transportation spending that is essentially anti-city and even anti-suburb.
In Ohio, however, urban counties consistently took home a smaller share of state highway funds than suburban and rural counties relative to their amount of vehicle traffic (vehicle miles traveled), car ownership (vehicle registrations), and demand for driving (gasoline sales).
Finally, Ohio restricts the use of gas tax revenues to highways only, which limits the ability of urban and suburban areas to invest in transit options or air quality improvements.
