The Law of Arms in Mediaeval England
Coats of arms are a common sight in England, and have been since the Middle Ages.
Because of the coat of arms' use as an mark of identification, and its signifigance as a mark of gentility, it was natural that laws regarding its use and inheritance would arise.
Since grants of coats of arms were fairly uncommon, as they were a display of royal favor, most gentlemen proved their rights by demonstrating ancient use, usually by displaying old sealed documents, stained glass, or other church monuments.

Other items may be added to the coat, such as a helmet (decorated with mantling) in a variety of meaningful postures and designs; supporters on either side of the shield and the compartment on which they usually stand; and a variety of medals, ribbons, mural crowns and other decorations.

Tips on Using the Sherlockian Heraldry e-book CD by Randall Stock
This folder contains the color illustrations of the Coats of Arms in bitmap (bmp) format.  All of these illustrations are in the main Heraldry file noted above in (a).  When printing the illustrations, some users might get better results from these files.  See the Using Graphics section below for more details.
Each Coat of Arms has both a color illustration and a written description.  The illustration always appears first, and is followed by the description.  Moving to the next page after the description will take you to another illustration, but it will not be the "next" alphabetical name since they are not in order.
The Coats of Arms are not in alphabetical order, so it's rarely useful to just page through the Sherlockian Heraldry file.  Instead, use the Index of bookmarks in the Navigation pane to jump directly to the desired page.
