		AVI itself is a M$ proprietary codec, and MPEG4 is another codec.
		Also, Xenos is incorrect on one point: AVI is not a codec, it's an A/V container format - and not a very good one, because it handles variable bitrate audio very poorly.

	WMV3 avi files to divx or xvid
		i had ffdshow installed and when i tried to open one of these files with vdub it gave me an error, i had to go to microsoft and install the wmv9 codec before vdub would open the file(which is wierd cuz i could watch it just fine with winamp, wmp, etc.).
		now i want to take the file and save it with a divx compression, but when i got to video — > compression it doenst show my divx or xvid codecs in the list of codecs that i can use, which isn’t right because i have ffdshow installed.
		The VCM package is required for any editing of windows media video 9 in an avi container.

	Snapz Pro X: saving videos - Ambrosia Software Web Board
		I would like to be able to use Techsmith's EnSharpen codec with Snapz Pro - in other words, I'd like to be able to save Quicktime videos using the EnSharpen codec, but it does not show up in the list of codecs during the video saving process.
		There has been a version, or versions maybe, of that codec released for the Mac, but we'd have to license it, and it doesn't work in all cases, so I don't know that it's ever going to be feasible.
		I don't think I was running snapz pro at the time of installation, at least I don't normally run Snapz pro (or anything else) in the background as background processes can interfere with the smooth operation of audio/music applications which place a very heavy realtime load on the system.
