In colonies possessing representative institutions without responsible government, the crown cannot (generally) legislate by order in council, and laws are made by the governor with the concurrence of the legislative body or bodies, one at least of these bodies in cases where a second chamber exists possessing a preponderance of elected representatives.
Colonial governors are classed as governors-general; governors; lieut.-governors; administrators; high commissioners; and commissioners, according to the status of the colony and dependency, or group of colonies and dependencies, over which they preside.
The extent of this burden was emphasized in 1909 by the revelations as to the increase of the German (and the allied Austrian) fleet.

Their first, second and third colonies, which arrived out in 1638 and 1640, and the fifth colony also, which came between those of Printz and Risingh, contained a good many Dutch, and were indeed partly recruited and fitted out in the Netherlands, with Dutch capital and under Dutch management.
This "listing" process was found excellently well suited to the low, flat lands of the peninsula, as, besides saving labor, it afforded a sort of easy drainage, the bottom of every furrow being a small ditch, and this enabled the farmers to plant their corn much earlier than they otherwise could have done.

 Quebec
In 1774, fearful that the French-speaking population of Quebec would side with the rebels of the 13 colonies to the south, the British Parliament passed the Quebec Act that paved the way to official recognition of the French language and French culture.
The Constitutional Act of 1791 saw the colony divided in two at the Ottawa River to accomadate the new arrivals; the western part became Upper Canada (now Ontario) and changed to the British legal system.
In the 1860s, the delegates from the colonies of British North America (Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland) met in a series of conferences in Charlottetown, Quebec City and London to discuss a broader union.

By the 1606 charter the colony was limited to 100 miles along the seaboard and 100 miles west from the coast.
In 1609 the London Company obtained a grant of land from sea to sea, and extending 400 miles along the Atlantic; but in 1624 its charter was annulled, and in 1632 the King carved the proprietary colony of Maryland out of Virginia.
As the colonies were growing in population, and as the charters of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia, and Carolina gave them great stretches of territory in the Mississippi valley, it was inevitable that, sooner or later, a bitter contest for possession of the country should take place between the French and the English in America.

Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
Until 1702 he was appointed by the governor, after which he was commissioned by the Crown.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

I found this, which lists all of the Virginia Governors, up through George Allen (I suppose none who have come since rate a mention?), with brief bios for the recent Governors.
And lest anyone quibble about “elected” governors, I will remind everyone that the Sovereign lacked authority to appoint Virginia’s governor from 1609-1624, and that Virginia had presidents from 1607-1609 (who, it may be of interest to note, served for one-year terms and were ineligible to succeed themselves in office–does that last part sound familiar?).
