In proprietary colonies (Penn.., Delaware, Maryland; and South Carolina) the proprietors appointed the governors and in royal colonies the governor was appointed by the Crown.
In 1636, the Reverend Thomas Hooker and his congregation of Calvinist Puritans migrated from Massachusetts Bay Colony to form a settlement in the valley of the Connecticut River.
Connecticut governors took the oath required by the acts of trade, and freemen of the colony took oaths to be faithful and loyal to their lawful sovereign, the King of England.

The administrative process which was necessitated by the imposition of the country rate, was the preparation of the list of taxables, with the estates which they possessed at their estimated value, the correction of these lists, the issue of warrants in accordance with them, and the collection of the tax.
Then the lists should be sent to the colony treasurer, and the treasurer should issue warrants to the constables of the several towns to collect the specified sums.
In 1636 an import duty of one-sixth their value was laid on fruits, spices, sugar, wine, liquors, and tobacco, and for those who intended to retail these commodities the rate was doubled.

It is thought that slaves, who accompanied their owners to Hartford for the yearly election of the colony's governor, chose a person to become a leader of their community as well.
A fl governor could be called on to perform important functions within his community, and the position commanded respect from both fl and white residents.
The last fl governor in Connecticut is considered to be Wilson Weston, who served as governor in the town of Seymour in 1856.

Though religious toleration had been introduced into other colonies previously by individual proprietors or governors, this was the earliest legislative enactment in America asserting the principle of religious toleration.
Governor Berkeley, who had been Governor since 1642, had Charles II proclaimed as King and invited him to assume the administration of Virginia.
According to the Act all English possessions could allow only English or Colonial vessels entrance to their ports; certain articles, produced in the colonies, such as sugar and tobacco, were known as "enumerated" goods, and were to be shipped to England only.

Between 1684 and 1777, the Colonial Attorneys General were appointed by the King of England, or the Colonial Governors on the Crown's behalf.
Until 1702 he was appointed by the governor, after which he was commissioned by the Crown.
By the Constitution the governor was required to do the appointing with the "advice and consent of the council." But in practice it subordinated the governor to the council whenever a majority of the assembly was politically opposed to him, and the annual election of the council greatly increased chances of such opposition.

 The Colonial Virginia Register
From 1652 to 1660 the Governors were elected by the House of Burgesses, though there is some reason to believe that their choice may have been influenced by the wishes of the Parliamentary authorities, or of Cromwell.
The Councillors were the Governor's advisers in executive matters, and patents, etc., are stated to be issued with their "advice and consent." They constituted the General Court -the supreme court of the Colony and also had legislative functions as members of the upper house of the Assembly, corresponding somewhat to our senate.
The colonial almanacs (which were always published late in the year before that whose date they bear-as is the case now) contain lists which have in the main been found to be very accurate, of the members of the House in existence at the time when the almanac was printed.

 Sven Gunnarsson and his Swanson Family
In August 1639, the Swedish government, needing settlers for its New Sweden colony, sent word to the governors of Elfsborg, Dalsland and Värmland to capture deserted soldiers and others who had committed some slight misdemeanor and to send them to America.
It was not surprising, therefore, that Sven Gunnarsson was one of the 22 freemen signing a petition of grievances which they submitted to Governor Printz in the summer of 1653.
Sven was a justice on the Upland Court, 1681-1682 and served in the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1683.

 Colonial Virginia
That a colony was planted in Virginia, at or near Jamestown, in 1526, again on the Rappahannock in 1570, is not generally known.
January 8, 1608, the first ship to arrive in the colony, since the settlement, anchored off Jamestown and landed what is termed the first supply of colonists who together with others, from a,ship arriving on the 20th of April, gave a total of 120 additional members, three in excess of the original number of settlers.
Governor Wyatt reported that in defense against the Indians during that year, more of the red men had lost their lives than had been the total from 1607 to the time of the massacre.
